Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) has successfully berthed MV Graceous, a 292-metre-long cape-sized bulk carrier, at the EQ-1 berth in its inner harbour, marking a significant operational milestone for the port. The vessel, which has a beam of 45 metres and a draft of 12.2 metres, is among the largest classes of bulk carriers operating globally. The achievement gives Visakhapatnam Port more than one cape-compliant berth, strengthening its ability to handle larger cargo vessels and enhancing overall cargo handling capacity. The development comes as ports across India continue to upgrade infrastructure and operational capabilities to accommodate larger ships and support growing maritime trade volumes.
Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) has successfully berthed MV Graceous, a 292-metre-long cape-sized bulk carrier, at the EQ-1 berth in the inner harbour, achieving a key operational milestone that expands the port’s capability to handle some of the world's largest bulk cargo vessels.
The vessel arrived at the EQ-1 berth in the past week and was accommodated within the inner harbour facilities of the port. According to VPA, the successful berthing of the cape-sized carrier represents a historic achievement for the port and demonstrates its growing capacity to manage larger vessels engaged in international maritime trade.
MV Graceous is a cape-sized bulk carrier measuring 292 metres in length, with a beam of 45 metres and a draft of 12.2 metres. Vessels in this category are designed to transport large quantities of dry bulk commodities and can carry up to 200,000 tonnes of deadweight cargo. Due to their size, cape-sized carriers are generally unable to transit through the Panama Canal and instead navigate around the Cape of Good Hope during international voyages.
The successful berthing of such a vessel highlights the port’s infrastructure and navigational capabilities. Only a limited number of ports worldwide are capable of accommodating cape-sized bulk carriers in fully loaded conditions, making the development a notable addition to Visakhapatnam Port’s operational profile.
VPA stated that the achievement has resulted in the port having more than one cape-compliant berth. This enhancement is expected to provide greater flexibility in vessel handling operations while increasing the port’s ability to cater to larger bulk cargo movements.
The port authority indicated that expanding its capability to berth large carriers forms part of its broader efforts to improve operational efficiency and support rising maritime trade requirements. Increased capacity for cape-sized vessels can help facilitate the movement of bulk commodities through the eastern coast, while also strengthening the port’s position as a major cargo handling gateway.
The development reflects ongoing efforts by Visakhapatnam Port to modernise operations and improve infrastructure to meet evolving shipping industry requirements. With the addition of another cape-compliant berth, the port is better positioned to accommodate larger vessels and handle growing cargo volumes in the years ahead.
