Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) has secured a contract worth INR 127 crore from Wangchhu Hydroelectric Power Ltd (WHPL), Bhutan, for diversion and enabling works associated with the Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project. The contract covers the construction of diversion tunnels, hydromechanical gates and cofferdams and is scheduled for completion within nine months. The works are intended to facilitate the commencement of the project's main civil construction activities and support adherence to the overall implementation schedule. The award comes as Bhutan accelerates hydropower development under its 13th Five-Year Plan (2024–29), which targets 6,000 MW of installed generation capacity through continued investment in large hydroelectric projects. HCC has maintained a presence in Bhutan's hydropower sector for more than three decades through several major projects.
Hindustan Construction Company Ltd (HCC) has secured an INR 127 crore contract from Wangchhu Hydroelectric Power Ltd (WHPL), Bhutan, for construction works related to the Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project, the company announced on Friday. The contract involves diversion infrastructure required to enable the start of the project's primary civil works and is expected to be completed within nine months.
The scope of the contract includes the construction of diversion tunnels, hydromechanical gates and cofferdams. These facilities form part of the enabling infrastructure necessary to divert river flows and create suitable conditions for the execution of the project's main construction activities.
According to the company, the diversion works are critical to ensuring the timely commencement of major civil works and maintaining the overall implementation schedule of the Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project. Such preliminary works typically serve as a key milestone in the development of large hydroelectric facilities, allowing subsequent construction phases to proceed in a planned manner.
The contract award comes amid a broader expansion drive in Bhutan's hydropower sector. Under the country's 13th Five-Year Plan covering the 2024–29 period, the Bhutanese government has set a target of achieving 6,000 MW of installed hydropower capacity. The plan includes continued investment in large hydroelectric projects aimed at strengthening the country's power generation capabilities and supporting economic development.
HCC stated that it has been associated with Bhutan's hydropower sector for more than three decades and has contributed to the development of several major hydroelectric projects in the country. These include the 1,020 MW Tala Hydroelectric Project, the 60 MW Kurichu Hydroelectric Project, the 1,200 MW Punatsangchhu-I Hydroelectric Project, the 114 MW Dagachhu Hydroelectric Project and the 118 MW Nikachhu Hydroelectric Project.
The company said its long-standing presence in Bhutan has contributed significantly to the country's hydropower generation infrastructure. The latest contract further strengthens HCC's participation in the Himalayan nation's ongoing power sector expansion programme.
Beyond its operations in Bhutan, HCC also highlighted its experience in hydropower development in India. The company stated that it has executed projects accounting for approximately 26 per cent of India's installed hydropower capacity, reflecting its involvement in the construction of large-scale water and energy infrastructure across the region.
The Wangchhu contract adds to HCC's hydropower portfolio at a time when both India and Bhutan continue to invest in renewable energy and hydroelectric generation projects to meet rising power demand and long-term energy requirements.
