President Donald Trump has announced plans to build a new pedestrian promenade connected to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, adding to a series of redevelopment projects underway across the U.S. capital. The proposed promenade is intended to improve pedestrian access between the memorial, the Potomac River and nearby tourist attractions. The announcement comes alongside progress on the refurbishment of the Reflecting Pool and the advancement of a proposed 250-foot Triumphal Arch. The projects form part of a broader effort by the administration to reshape key public spaces in Washington, although some initiatives have faced legal and public scrutiny.
President Donald Trump has announced plans to construct a new promenade linked to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, marking the latest addition to a series of redevelopment and infrastructure projects being pursued across the U.S. capital.
Speaking at the White House in the past week, Trump said there had been suggestions to name the new structure the Trump Promenade, although he indicated that no final decision had been made on the naming. He added that the project would be visually appealing and would enhance access around one of Washington’s most visited landmarks.
The Lincoln Memorial, which honours former U.S. President Abraham Lincoln and stands at the western end of the National Mall, overlooks the Reflecting Pool and remains one of the city's most recognised monuments. The memorial attracts millions of visitors annually and serves as a focal point for national commemorations and public gatherings.
According to Trump, the proposed promenade would be built over two roads running alongside the memorial. The elevated pedestrian connection is expected to improve movement between the Lincoln Memorial, the Potomac River waterfront and nearby tourist destinations. He stated that the project would extend the memorial’s connection toward the river, aligning with long-standing plans for the area.
The White House has not yet released additional design details, timelines or cost estimates for the project.
The proposal is part of a wider redevelopment agenda focused on Washington’s monumental core. Alongside the promenade, the administration has been advancing plans for a 250-foot Triumphal Arch across the Potomac River from the Lincoln Memorial. The proposal received a procedural boost in the past week after a U.S. planning commission moved the project forward for further consideration.
Trump welcomed the development, stating that the structure would become one of the most significant arches ever built once completed.
At the same time, work has progressed on the renovation of the Reflecting Pool on the National Mall. Water recently began flowing into the upgraded pool following refurbishment works. The project has drawn particular attention because Trump personally supported the installation of a new surface featuring a colour he described as “American flag blue.”
Another major project underway is the construction of a 90,000-square-foot ballroom on the site of the demolished East Wing area of the White House. Trump has repeatedly promoted the ballroom proposal as part of his broader vision for modernising and expanding key government facilities.
However, several redevelopment initiatives associated with the administration have faced legal challenges. One notable dispute involved the performing arts centre named after former President John F. Kennedy. A board made up of Trump appointees had approved renaming the institution the Trump-Kennedy Center, but a federal judge recently ordered the venue’s name to be restored to the Kennedy Center.
Trump’s latest announcement further highlights his continued focus on reshaping prominent public spaces in Washington through a mix of infrastructure, civic and landmark development projects.
