The Centre’s PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has crossed 41 lakh beneficiary households, with the government aiming to reach 75 lakh rooftop solar-powered homes by the end of 2026. Union New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi said more than 65 lakh applications are currently under process, reflecting strong adoption of residential solar energy across the country. Launched in February 2024 with an outlay of INR 75,021 crore, the scheme provides subsidies for rooftop solar installations and offers households up to 300 units of free electricity each month. The programme has also recorded substantial growth in rooftop solar deployment on government buildings, with over 53,000 structures already solarised and 855 MW of cumulative installed capacity achieved.
India has crossed 41 lakh beneficiary households under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, with Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi expressing confidence that the scheme will reach 75 lakh rooftop solar-powered homes by the end of 2026. The target comes amid a sharp rise in installations and a growing pipeline of applications under the Centre’s flagship residential solar initiative.
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana was launched in February 2024 with a total outlay of INR 75,021 crore to promote rooftop solar installations and provide up to 300 units of free electricity every month to one crore households. The scheme offers Central Financial Assistance (CFA) covering 60 per cent of the cost for rooftop solar systems up to 2 kW and 40 per cent of the additional cost for systems between 2 kW and 3 kW capacity. The subsidy is capped at 3 kW.
Under the programme, beneficiaries receive a subsidy of INR 30,000 for a 1 kW system, INR 60,000 for a 2 kW system and INR 78,000 for systems of 3 kW or higher.
Sharing an update on social media platform X, Joshi stated that the scheme had transformed India’s energy landscape at an unprecedented pace, crossing the milestone of 40 lakh solar-powered households within two years. He noted that more than 65 lakh applications were already in the pipeline and that the government was targeting 75 lakh homes over the coming months.
The minister said the utility-led aggregation (ULA) implementation model would primarily benefit poor and middle-income households, particularly families with electricity consumption in the 1–3 kW range. According to him, the strong public response reflected the government's efforts to expand access to solar energy at the household level.
Joshi also reviewed the progress of rooftop solar installations on government
