Synopsis

• BMC has installed four seismographic instruments at the construction site of a multimodal transit hub near Dahisar Toll Naka, following complaints from residents of the adjacent Madhuban Cooperative Housing Society of structural cracks caused by repeated blasting.
• The INR 1,500-crore project, being built on the site of the defunct Octroi Naka, involves regular explosions that residents and nearby shopkeepers describe as generating earthquake-like tremors across the neighbourhood.
• Residents approached local MLA Prakash Surve, who wrote to Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide requesting a halt to excavation work, raising accountability concerns if buildings collapse.
• The seismograph readings will determine whether the ongoing blasting is directly responsible for the structural damage reported in surrounding buildings and commercial establishments.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation installed four seismographic instruments at the construction site of a multimodal transport and commercial hub near Dahisar Toll Naka on Wednesday, 4 June 2026, following sustained complaints from residents of an adjacent housing society about structural damage caused by blasting vibrations. The findings from the instruments are expected to determine whether the ongoing excavation and blasting operations are directly responsible for the cracks reported in surrounding residential and commercial buildings.
The project in question is an INR 1,500-crore BMC initiative to construct a multimodal transit hub at Dahisar Toll Naka, being developed on the site of the now-defunct Octroi Naka. The construction involves regular blasting, which has generated intense vibrations felt widely across the neighbourhood. A senior civic official confirmed that the four seismographs were deployed to monitor the vibrations generated by the blasting activities.
Residents of Madhuban Cooperative Housing Society, located adjacent to the project, have alleged that weeks of blasting have caused visible structural damage to their buildings. Cracks have appeared in walls and pillars, and residents state they are frightened, sleep-deprived, and increasingly anxious about the structural integrity of their homes. Resident Supriya Talgaonkar stated that every blast sends shockwaves through the building, with walls having developed cracks, and expressed uncertainty about how much more the structures could withstand.
The impact has extended beyond residential buildings to commercial establishments in the vicinity. Shopkeepers operating near the site stated that the explosions are so intense that they routinely abandon their shops when blasting is underway. Shop owner Pradeep Nair described the experience as resembling an earthquake, noting that walls in both his shop and his apartment have developed cracks. Several traders also raised concerns about the loss of business, stating that customers avoid the area during blasting hours, directly affecting daily sales.
Residents alleged that repeated complaints to civic authorities went unheeded, prompting them to write directly to the BMC chief and the Chief Minister demanding an immediate review. They subsequently approached local MLA Prakash Surve, who wrote to Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide requesting a halt to the excavation work. Surve raised the question of accountability, asking who would be held responsible in the event of a building collapse, given the sustained complaints about structural weakening.
The explosions occur at regular intervals, producing tremor-like vibrations felt across the neighbourhood. The situation is described as particularly distressing for senior citizens and young children who remain indoors for most of the day. The installation of the seismographs represents the first formal civic response to the complaints, though residents and traders continue to seek a suspension of blasting operations pending a full structural assessment of the affected buildings.
