Western Railway has started fencing and concreting work on reclaimed land at Garib Nagar in Bandra East following the demolition of more than 500 unauthorised structures. The cleared land, spread across about 5,200 sq m, has been secured to prevent fresh encroachments and facilitate the planned expansion of Bandra Terminus. The project forms part of broader efforts to increase station capacity and improve rail infrastructure in Mumbai. Authorities have accelerated site protection measures while continuing debris removal and land development activities.
Western Railway has commenced fencing, concreting and land protection works at Garib Nagar in Bandra East after completing a major demolition drive that cleared more than 500 unauthorised structures from railway land earmarked for the expansion of Bandra Terminus.
The action follows an extensive encroachment removal operation carried out in the settlement located adjacent to the railway corridor. Railway authorities reclaimed approximately 5,200 sq m of land, which is expected to play a key role in the proposed infrastructure expansion at Bandra Terminus.
Following the clearance exercise, officials moved quickly to secure the site through fencing and concrete barriers to prevent any fresh encroachments. Debris removal activities have also been undertaken to prepare the land for future development and railway-related works.
The reclaimed parcel forms part of Western Railway's larger plan to augment passenger handling capacity and improve operational infrastructure at Bandra Terminus, one of Mumbai's important long-distance railway stations. The expansion project is expected to support future increases in train operations while addressing space constraints within the existing station premises.
According to railway officials, immediate protection of the land was considered necessary to ensure that the recovered area remains available for planned infrastructure works. Similar measures have been adopted in previous railway land recovery projects across Mumbai to safeguard public assets and facilitate project implementation.
The demolition drive was among the largest anti-encroachment exercises undertaken in the area in recent years. Multiple agencies were involved in the operation, including railway authorities, law enforcement personnel and local administrative officials, to ensure the clearance process was completed smoothly.
Bandra Terminus has witnessed growing passenger traffic over the years and serves as a major origin and destination point for long-distance trains connecting Mumbai with several parts of the country. Railway authorities have been exploring capacity enhancement measures to accommodate future operational requirements and improve passenger convenience.
Urban infrastructure experts note that land availability remains one of the biggest challenges for transport expansion projects in Mumbai. Reclaiming and securing railway land is often considered a critical first step before undertaking station upgrades, track augmentation or other capacity enhancement initiatives.
With fencing and concreting work now underway, Western Railway has moved into the next phase of securing the reclaimed land. The protected site is expected to support future development associated with the Bandra Terminus expansion project, which forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Mumbai's rail transport infrastructure and improve operational efficiency across the suburban and long-distance rail network.
