The Union Cabinet has approved two National Highway widening projects in Telangana with a combined length of 190.76 km and an estimated investment of INR 7,597.16 crore. The projects involve the four-laning of the Armoor–Jagtial–Mancherial section of NH-63 and the Jagtial–Karimnagar section of NH-563, which pass through several heavily urbanised and congested locations in the state. The developments will be executed under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) and Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) frameworks. Designed with bypasses around built-up areas and a target speed of 100 kmph, the projects aim to improve regional connectivity, reduce travel times, support freight movement and strengthen economic activity across Nizamabad, Jagtial, Mancherial and Karimnagar districts.
The Union Cabinet has approved two major National Highway expansion projects in Telangana covering a combined length of 190.76 km at an estimated cost of INR 7,597.16 crore. The approvals were granted by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with the objective of easing congestion, improving regional connectivity and enhancing transport efficiency across several districts in the state.
The approved projects include the widening of the Armoor–Jagtial–Mancherial section of NH-63 and the Jagtial–Karimnagar section of NH-563 to four-lane standards. The NH-63 project will be implemented under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), while the NH-563 stretch will be developed under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model.
According to an official statement, the Armoor–Jagtial–Mancherial corridor passes through the districts of Nizamabad, Jagtial and Mancherial, where traffic congestion has become a significant challenge due to dense urban development along the existing route. Key settlements affected by traffic bottlenecks include Anksapoor, Korutla, Jagtial, Dharmapuri, Lakshettipet and Mancherial.
The Jagtial–Karimnagar section similarly traverses heavily built-up areas and experiences substantial congestion. Locations along this corridor include Jagtial, Potharam, Gangadhara and Karimnagar, where increasing traffic volumes have put pressure on existing road infrastructure.
As part of the approved plans, both highway stretches will be upgraded to four-lane configurations and will include bypasses around urbanised areas to facilitate smoother traffic movement. The projects will adopt an open tolling system and are being designed to support travel speeds of up to 100 km per hour, helping improve operational efficiency and reducing delays across the network.
The highway upgrades are expected to significantly improve connectivity between major towns and districts in northern Telangana. The government stated that the projects would strengthen regional mobility while supporting broader socio-economic development in Nizamabad, Jagtial, Mancherial and Karimnagar districts.
Upon completion, the Armoor–Mancherial journey is expected to become approximately one hour and 30 minutes shorter, while travel time between Jagtial and Karimnagar is projected to reduce by around 45 minutes. The upgraded corridors are also intended to provide safer and more reliable connectivity for both passenger vehicles and freight transportation.
The government further stated that the projects are expected to deliver operational benefits through lower fuel consumption, reduced vehicle operating costs and a decline in carbon emissions, contributing to improved transport efficiency across the region.
