Synopsis

The Union Cabinet has approved two highway development projects worth INR 4,415.60 crore in Madhya Pradesh aimed at improving connectivity, road safety and freight movement across key districts. The projects involve upgrading and widening sections of NH-347B covering more than 108 km through Betul, Khandwa, Khargone and Barwani districts. The plan also includes the construction of a 16.20-km greenfield bypass in Khargone. Implemented under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), the projects are expected to address existing geometric deficiencies, congestion and safety concerns while strengthening links to economic, logistics and social infrastructure nodes under the PM Gati Shakti framework.

The Union Cabinet has approved two road infrastructure projects worth INR 4,415.60 crore in Madhya Pradesh, paving the way for the expansion and modernisation of key stretches of National Highway-347B across Betul, Khandwa, Khargone and Barwani districts. The approval was granted on Wednesday with the objective of improving regional connectivity, reducing travel time and supporting economic activity through better transport infrastructure.
The approved projects include the upgradation of the existing intermediate-lane Hiwarkhedi–Roshni–Ashapur–Rudhy section of NH-347B to a two-lane highway with paved shoulders. In addition, the Deshgaon–Julwaniya section of NH-347B will be widened from the existing two-lane configuration to a four-lane highway.
Together, the projects will cover a length of 108.643 km and will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), a public-private partnership framework commonly used for national highway development projects.
According to an official statement, the highway upgrades have been designed to address several long-standing infrastructure challenges along the corridor. These include severe geometric deficiencies, sharp curves and congestion in built-up stretches that currently affect traffic movement across the four districts.
As part of the project, a 16.20-km greenfield bypass will be constructed in Khargone district. The bypass is intended to divert through traffic away from densely populated urban stretches, thereby improving traffic flow and reducing congestion within local settlements.
The government stated that the upgraded corridor is expected to increase average travel speeds and reduce journey times for both passenger and freight traffic. Improvements in road design and capacity are also anticipated to enhance road safety standards while lowering vehicle operating costs and fuel consumption.
Beyond transportation benefits, the project is expected to strengthen connectivity between important economic and social centres across the state. The corridor will provide improved access to major logistics hubs and facilitate the movement of goods across the region.
The statement further noted that the upgraded highway network will support multimodal connectivity by linking six PM Gati Shakti economic nodes, five social nodes and five logistics nodes. By integrating these strategic locations, the corridor is expected to improve the efficiency of regional supply chains and enhance mobility for businesses, commuters and freight operators across Madhya Pradesh.
