• Delhi government has directed MCD to intensify action against illegal constructions after a building collapse near Saket Metro station in south Delhi.
• The incident led to multiple casualties and injuries, triggering urgent administrative response.
• Authorities have started inspections in vulnerable areas, especially across South Delhi zones like Saket and Mehrauli.
• Notices are being issued to owners of unauthorized buildings, with sealing and eviction drives planned.
• The government has also ordered accountability for officials linked to enforcement lapses and violations.
The Delhi government has directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to take strict and immediate action against illegal constructions following the collapse of a multi-storey building near Saket Metro station in south Delhi, which resulted in multiple deaths and injuries.
The directive has come as the administration increases scrutiny over unauthorized constructions in densely populated parts of the city, particularly in South Delhi. Authorities have been asked to identify structurally unsafe buildings and act against violations of building regulations without delay. The Chief Minister has also emphasized that responsibility must be fixed at every level, including officials and builders involved in negligence or violations.
Following the incident, civic agencies have started detailed inspections of buildings suspected of breaching approved norms. Special focus has been placed on structures exceeding permitted height limits or constructed without valid approvals. Areas such as Saket, Mehrauli and surrounding localities are currently under review, as these regions have reported repeated cases of unauthorized construction activity in recent years.
The MCD has begun issuing notices to property owners linked to illegal or unsafe structures and is preparing enforcement action that may include sealing and eviction. Once the required notice period is completed, authorities are expected to proceed with action against buildings found in violation of rules. The drive aims to reduce risks posed by structurally weak or illegally modified buildings in residential and mixed-use areas.
Investigations into the Saket building collapse are also ongoing. Authorities are examining possible lapses in supervision and whether prior warnings regarding unauthorized construction on the site were ignored. Reports suggest that concerns had been raised earlier about illegal additions, which are now being reviewed as part of the inquiry. Action has already been initiated against certain civic officials in connection with oversight failures linked to the incident.
Officials have indicated that the crackdown will not be restricted to the collapse site but will extend across multiple parts of Delhi where similar violations are suspected. The objective is to strengthen enforcement of building norms and reduce safety risks arising from unchecked construction activity in urban areas.
