Synopsis

Northern Railway’s Jammu Division reported earnings of INR 66.50 lakh through a special ticket-checking drive carried out in May 2026. The drive focused on identifying ticketless and irregular travel across stations, trains, and platforms within the division’s jurisdiction. A total of 12,693 cases were registered during the period, reflecting strict enforcement against violations. Officials stated that the initiative was aimed not only at revenue protection but also at discouraging unauthorised travel and improving discipline among passengers. Similar enforcement drives are expected to continue in the coming period to maintain compliance.

Northern Railway’s Jammu Division has reported a collection of INR 66.50 lakh through a dedicated ticket-checking drive conducted across its network during May 2026. The campaign was implemented to curb ticketless and irregular travel and safeguard railway revenue.
According to official data available up to the end of the month-long exercise, 12,693 cases were recorded against passengers found travelling without valid tickets or involved in other ticketing violations. The total amount collected through penalties stood at INR 66,50,165.
Railway officials noted that intensive checks were carried out by ticket-checking staff at railway stations, on trains, and at platform areas across the division. The fines were imposed on passengers found travelling without tickets, without valid passes, or occupying platform areas without platform tickets, along with other related violations.
Officials further stated that such enforcement actions are carried out regularly to reduce revenue leakage and ensure compliance with railway rules. The drive also aimed to address issues such as overcrowding and unauthorised seat occupation, which often affect passengers travelling with valid tickets.
Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of Jammu Division, Uchit Singhal, observed that ticketless travel leads not only to financial losses for the Railways but also creates inconvenience for genuine passengers. He noted that it often results in overcrowding and unauthorised use of seating arrangements, which impacts travel experience and safety.
He added that special checking squads are being deployed on a continuous basis to strengthen enforcement. According to him, the objective of these drives is not limited to penalty collection but also to raise awareness among passengers regarding the importance of travelling with valid tickets.
Passengers have also been advised to book tickets through authorised channels such as computerised reservation centres, the UTS mobile application, IRCTC platform, or ticket counters. Those visiting stations for pick-up or drop-off purposes were reminded to purchase platform tickets.
Officials cautioned that passengers found violating ticketing rules may face penalties and legal action under provisions of the Railways Act, 1989. The division also indicated that similar drives will continue in the future to ensure better compliance and improve operational discipline across the network.
