The Andhra Pradesh government has approved an artificial intelligence-based traffic management initiative for Visakhapatnam, sanctioning INR 99.19 crore for the implementation of Project SARTHI, a technology-driven urban mobility programme aimed at improving traffic operations, road safety and enforcement across the city.
The project is intended to modernise traffic management infrastructure by deploying an integrated intelligent transport system capable of monitoring, analysing and responding to road conditions in real time. The approval comes as Visakhapatnam continues to witness increasing vehicle ownership, expanding urban development and growing pressure on existing transport infrastructure.
Under the proposed framework, the city will be equipped with AI-enabled surveillance systems, smart traffic monitoring tools and advanced analytics platforms designed to support traffic regulation and enforcement. The project will facilitate real-time monitoring of vehicle movement, traffic density and road incidents through a centralised command-and-control mechanism.
Officials expect the system to improve traffic flow management by enabling faster identification of congestion points and more efficient deployment of traffic regulation measures. The use of artificial intelligence is also expected to support automated detection of traffic violations and strengthen enforcement capabilities across major road corridors and junctions.
Project SARTHI has been conceived as a comprehensive mobility management platform that integrates multiple traffic-related functions under a single technological framework. In addition to traffic monitoring, the system is expected to support emergency response coordination, incident management and data-driven planning for future transport infrastructure requirements.
The initiative is particularly significant for Visakhapatnam, which has emerged as one of Andhra Pradesh’s key urban and economic centres. Rapid residential growth, commercial expansion and increasing freight and passenger movement have contributed to rising traffic volumes across the city in recent years, creating a need for more sophisticated traffic management solutions.
Authorities have indicated that the project will involve the installation of surveillance cameras, automated number plate recognition systems, intelligent signalling components and supporting digital infrastructure. The collected data will be processed through AI-based applications to generate actionable insights for traffic authorities and urban administrators.
The approval of Project SARTHI aligns with broader efforts by the state government to incorporate technology-led governance solutions into urban infrastructure management. By leveraging digital systems and artificial intelligence, the administration aims to improve operational efficiency while enhancing commuter safety and travel reliability.
Once implemented, the project is expected to provide a unified platform for managing traffic operations across Visakhapatnam, helping authorities address congestion, improve compliance with traffic regulations and strengthen overall urban mobility management. The initiative represents one of the largest technology-driven traffic infrastructure investments undertaken by the state government in recent years.
