• Odisha is preparing to launch 47 national highway projects worth INR 12,102 crore after completing 49 road infrastructure projects valued at INR 1,721 crore.
• The upcoming projects include bypasses, bridges and corridor upgrades aimed at improving regional and inter-district connectivity.
• A state-level review assessed the status of ongoing, tender-stage and pending highway works to accelerate implementation timelines.
• The planned investments form part of a broader effort to strengthen Odisha's transport network and support economic growth through improved road infrastructure.
Odisha is set to enter a new phase of highway development with plans to commence 47 national highway projects worth INR 12,102 crore, following the completion of 49 road infrastructure works with a combined investment of INR 1,721 crore. The proposed projects are expected to expand road capacity, improve connectivity and address transportation bottlenecks across several districts in the state.
The upcoming infrastructure programme was reviewed during a high-level meeting chaired by Odisha Works Minister Shri Prithviraj Harichandan, where officials examined the progress of major national highway schemes and discussed measures to expedite project execution. The review focused on large-scale projects at various stages of development, including those under construction, awaiting work orders and undergoing tendering processes.
According to officials, the 49 completed projects are expected to be inaugurated shortly, while groundwork is being finalised for the next batch of highway developments. Together, these projects represent a significant addition to Odisha's transport infrastructure pipeline and reflect continued investment in improving mobility across urban, semi-urban and rural regions.
The forthcoming projects include a mix of highway widening works, bypass corridors, rail overbridges and bridge infrastructure. Several bypass projects proposed for growing towns and urban centres are intended to divert through traffic away from congested settlements, improving traffic flow and road safety while reducing travel delays for long-distance commuters and freight operators.
Authorities also reviewed the progress of important bridge and overbridge projects designed to eliminate level crossings and improve corridor efficiency. These interventions are expected to strengthen connectivity on key routes while enhancing the reliability of road transport networks serving industrial, commercial and agricultural regions.
During the review, attention was given to challenges affecting project delivery, including land acquisition, forest clearances, utility relocation and inter-departmental coordination. Officials discussed strategies to address procedural hurdles and ensure timely execution of projects that are considered critical to the state's infrastructure development agenda.
The state government has directed implementing agencies to maintain close coordination with central authorities, local administrations and utility providers to minimise delays during construction. Particular emphasis has been placed on ensuring that preparatory activities are completed ahead of execution to prevent disruptions once projects enter the construction phase.
Odisha has witnessed sustained growth in road infrastructure investment in recent years as authorities seek to improve connectivity between economic centres, ports, industrial clusters and hinterland regions. The latest pipeline of projects is expected to further strengthen freight movement, reduce travel times and support economic activity across multiple sectors.
With completed projects nearing inauguration and a fresh round of highway developments moving towards implementation, the state is positioning road infrastructure as a key component of its long-term connectivity and development strategy. The proposed investments are expected to add substantial capacity to Odisha's transport network while supporting future growth requirements across the state.
