Synopsis

A fire broke out at the under-construction Mumbai Metro Line 2B site near Bandra Reclamation flyover, prompting the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to initiate a safety probe into the incident. Officials confirmed that no structural damage was reported to the metro viaduct and no injuries occurred, although the blaze led to temporary disruption in the area. The incident occurred near a key elevated section of the Metro 2B corridor connecting Bandra East and West, where construction activity is ongoing as part of Mumbai’s expanding metro network.

A fire incident was reported at the under-construction Mumbai Metro Line 2B site near the Bandra Reclamation flyover, leading the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to order a detailed safety investigation into the matter.
The blaze occurred late in the night at a construction location along the elevated corridor that forms part of the Metro Line 2B project, which connects Andheri to Mankhurd through Bandra and key central Mumbai nodes. The affected stretch lies near a crucial interchange point linking Bandra East and West, where large-scale metro infrastructure work is currently underway.
According to officials, the fire broke out near pillar P-400 on pylon 4 of the viaduct structure at around 10:52 pm. Fire brigade personnel were deployed immediately and managed to extinguish the blaze within a short duration. No injuries were reported in the incident.
MMRDA has confirmed that the fire did not cause any structural damage to the metro viaduct or associated civil works. However, the authority has initiated a safety probe to determine the cause of the incident and assess compliance with construction safety protocols at the site.
The incident briefly disrupted traffic movement in the Bandra Reclamation area, which is a high-density corridor connecting western and eastern Mumbai. The stretch is a critical junction for commuters travelling between Bandra, Khar and adjoining suburbs, and also serves as a key link for ongoing infrastructure projects in the region.
Mumbai Metro Line 2B is part of the city’s wider metro expansion programme aimed at strengthening east-west connectivity across the metropolitan region. The corridor, once fully operational, is expected to integrate with multiple metro lines, suburban rail networks and other transport systems to improve urban mobility.
Construction work on the line has been progressing in phases, with multiple contractors engaged in viaduct erection, station development and system installation. The Bandra section, in particular, involves complex elevated structures due to space constraints and heavy traffic movement in the surrounding area.
Authorities are expected to review safety measures at the site as part of the ongoing probe, including material handling, on-site storage practices and fire prevention systems deployed during construction activities. Further updates are likely after the completion of the preliminary investigation.
