The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has entered into a partnership with the MahaTennis Foundation to develop a world-class tennis facility in Andheri, Mumbai. The project, planned on approximately two acres of MHADA-owned land, aims to strengthen sports infrastructure in the city and promote tennis training and development for emerging players. The initiative, formalised through a memorandum of understanding, is expected to upgrade existing recreational land into a structured sporting hub, supported through public-private collaboration and financial backing for infrastructure development.
The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has partnered with the MahaTennis Foundation to develop a dedicated tennis centre in Andheri, marking a further expansion of sports infrastructure development on public land in Mumbai.
The collaboration, formalised through a memorandum of understanding, involves the development of a world-class tennis facility on approximately two acres of MHADA-owned land located in the Kole Kalyan area of Andheri. The land, which has been earmarked for recreational use, will be converted into structured sporting infrastructure aimed at improving access to tennis training facilities in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
As part of the arrangement, the MahaTennis Foundation will be responsible for developing and operating the facility, with support from MHADA in the form of financial and structural facilitation. The foundation, which is engaged in promoting tennis and training emerging players across Maharashtra, will use the facility to expand its coaching and development programmes.
The project is expected to include modern tennis courts and allied infrastructure designed to support both training and competitive play. It forms part of broader efforts by state authorities to utilise available urban land for public sports infrastructure, particularly in densely populated areas where access to open recreational spaces remains limited.
According to officials, the initiative is aligned with Maharashtra’s wider objective of strengthening grassroots sports development and improving participation in disciplines such as tennis. The partnership model is intended to combine institutional land availability with specialised sporting expertise to create structured training environments for athletes.
MHADA has in recent years undertaken several initiatives involving land allocation for non-residential community use, including sports and recreational infrastructure. The Andheri project continues this approach by repurposing a designated recreational plot for organised sporting development.
The MahaTennis Foundation, which operates tennis training programmes and supports players through structured coaching initiatives, is expected to utilise the facility to expand its existing training ecosystem and increase accessibility for players from Mumbai and surrounding regions.
The development of the tennis centre is also expected to contribute to the broader sporting infrastructure in Andheri, an area that already hosts multiple recreational and sports facilities. Once operational, the centre is likely to serve as a training and development hub for players at different skill levels, supporting both amateur and competitive tennis activity in the region.
