The Government of India has identified 74 locations for the development of new land ports across the country, including three along the border with China and six along the Pakistan border, as part of a broader strategy to strengthen border infrastructure, trade facilitation and regional connectivity.
The proposal was outlined recently by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI), which oversees the development and management of integrated check posts and land ports across India's international borders. The planned expansion is aimed at improving the movement of goods and passengers while modernising border infrastructure at key crossing points.
According to official information, the proposed network of 74 land ports spans multiple international borders and is intended to support customs clearance, immigration procedures, cargo handling and security operations. The facilities are expected to provide integrated infrastructure that brings together various government agencies involved in border management and trade facilitation.
Of the proposed locations, three land ports have been identified along the India-China border and six along the India-Pakistan border. The remaining sites are spread across borders shared with neighbouring countries, reflecting the government's focus on strengthening connectivity and trade infrastructure throughout the region.
The initiative builds on the existing framework of integrated check posts developed by the LPAI. These facilities serve as designated points for cross-border movement and are equipped with infrastructure for customs, immigration, quarantine and security checks. The proposed expansion seeks to address growing trade requirements and improve operational efficiency at border crossings.
Officials indicated that land ports play a critical role in facilitating formal trade and reducing logistical bottlenecks by providing dedicated infrastructure for cargo movement and passenger processing. Improved border facilities are also expected to support economic activity in adjoining regions by enhancing connectivity and reducing transit delays.
The development programme is significant from an infrastructure perspective as it involves the creation of transport, logistics and administrative facilities across multiple states. Border infrastructure has increasingly become a focus area for public investment, particularly in regions where connectivity and trade links are viewed as important for economic development and strategic considerations.
The proposed land ports will be taken up in phases, subject to feasibility assessments, land availability, security considerations and coordination with state governments and other agencies. Detailed project planning and implementation schedules are expected to be finalised over time.
The expansion of India's land port network represents one of the largest planned additions to the country's border infrastructure system and is intended to strengthen trade facilitation, connectivity and administrative capacity across key international gateways.
