The old Kasheli Creek bridge on the Mumbai-Nashik Expressway remains structurally sound despite a partial median collapse, according to MSRDC officials. Major repairs will commence after the new adjoining bridge, currently 70% complete, opens by mid-year. The old bridge, built in 1985, is a vital link for heavy commercial traffic and part of the Samruddhi Mahamarg. Once the expansion is complete, the old bridge will serve Thane-bound traffic, while the new bridge will handle Nashik-bound vehicles. As part of a broader INR 1,000 crore highway expansion, this project enhances connectivity, supports logistics, and strengthens Maharashtra's transport infrastructure.
The old Kasheli Creek bridge, a key connector on the Mumbai-Nashik Expressway, has come under scrutiny following a partial collapse of its median. Despite this, officials have assured commuters that the structure remains safe. The old Kasheli Creek bridge plays a crucial role in connecting Mumbai with states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. It also facilitates heavy commercial traffic to Bhiwandi, a prominent logistics hub. Additionally, the structure is integral to the Samruddhi Mahamarg, which spans 701 km. Currently, 625 km of this expressway is operational, with the remaining stretch nearing completion.
The section of the Kasheli Creek bridge that collapsed dates back to 1985 and is not part of the original structure. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) confirmed that the bridge remains structurally sound. Once the new bridge is operational, the old bridge will undergo major upgrades, including slab recasting. Consultants are designing these enhancements, which will begin promptly after the new bridge's opening.
The existing four-lane bridge currently handles traffic in both directions. Post-expansion, it will cater to Thane-bound traffic, while the new bridge will accommodate vehicles heading toward Nashik and beyond. This development forms part of a larger project to expand the Mumbai-Nashik highway, initiated in 2022, at an investment of INR 1,000 crore for a 23.5-km stretch. The new Kasheli Creek bridge accounts for INR 100 crore of this project.
The Kasheli Creek bridge stands as a crucial infrastructure element on the Mumbai-Nashik Expressway, despite challenges. While officials maintain the safety of the old structure, plans for its extensive rehabilitation underscore its long-term importance. The completion of the new adjoining bridge will not only enhance traffic management but also ensure the durability of the ageing structure.
