Assam has received approval for 3.8 lakh new houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, involving an investment of nearly INR 5,000 crore. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma received the approval from Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan during a meeting. Additional houses will also be sanctioned for flood-affected areas to support reconstruction, while further housing assistance is expected for tea garden areas. The state also received INR 139 crore under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana for agricultural investment and sustainable farming.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan earlier this week, during which the state received approval for 3.8 lakh new homes under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). The housing programme involves an investment of nearly INR 5,000 crore.
The approval document was handed over to Sarma during the meeting. The Union minister also assured the chief minister that additional PMAY houses would be sanctioned for areas affected by the recent floods, allowing affected families to rebuild their homes.
Sarma said the Centre would provide further support for housing in Assam's tea garden areas. Housing for tea garden communities is also relevant to the state's recent efforts to provide land rights to tea garden workers. Assam has been working to grant residential land rights to more than 3.5 lakh families across hundreds of tea estates, which can also improve their access to housing-related government schemes.
The chief minister also received a sanction of INR 139 crore under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana. The funds will be used to support agricultural investment and promote sustainable farming in the state.
The latest housing approval adds to Assam's ongoing implementation of PMAY-Gramin. The state had reported the completion of around 22 lakh houses under the rural housing scheme by July and was targeting another two lakh homes within the following 100 days.
The new allocation is expected to be particularly relevant for households in flood-prone areas, where recurring floods have caused damage to homes and disrupted livelihoods. The Centre's assurance of additional houses for affected families indicates that part of the upcoming housing support will be directed towards rehabilitation.
Sarma expressed gratitude to the Union minister for the approvals and for the Centre's support to Assam following the recent floods.
