Synopsis

Forty-nine micro, small and medium enterprises have proposed investments of INR 2,320.97 crore in Maharashtra's Chakan-Bhosari industrial belt in Pune district, according to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The investments, formalised through memoranda of understanding, are expected to increase production capacity and create thousands of jobs. The state government will also conduct an MSME census to assess the number, nature, employment, production capacity and requirements of such units. The announcement comes amid Opposition allegations about industries leaving Chakan because of traffic congestion and infrastructure issues, which the state government has rejected.

Forty-nine MSMEs have proposed investments worth INR 2,320.97 crore in the Chakan-Bhosari industrial belt of Pune district, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said at an industry event.
The investments have been formalised through memoranda of understanding (MoUs) and are expected to increase production capacity, create thousands of jobs and strengthen the industrial ecosystem in the Pune region. The companies are expected to begin production within one to two years.
Fadnavis said the MSME sector plays an important role in supporting large industries, particularly the automobile and engineering sectors in Pune and surrounding areas. He also said MSMEs are helping promote a "local to global" approach by developing alternatives to imported products.
The state government has decided to conduct an MSME census to assess the number and nature of these units, their employment generation, production capacity and requirements. The data will be used to formulate policies and improve facilities for the sector. A separate mechanism has also been created for the planned and faster development of MSMEs in Maharashtra.
The Industries Department and Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) will take steps to provide land, infrastructure and other required facilities to the units that have signed the MoUs.
The announcement comes amid Opposition claims that some industries are considering moving out of the Chakan MIDC area because of severe traffic congestion and inadequate infrastructure. The state government has rejected these allegations.
Fadnavis said the government is also working to modernise industrial estates developed three to four decades ago and convert them into "industrial cities" with independent administrative mechanisms. Under the proposed model, local taxes could be used for administration, sanitation and infrastructure development.
The government plans to introduce this industrial city model in Pune district and gradually transform existing industrial estates into modern industrial cities. The move is intended to improve infrastructure and the operating environment for industries while supporting new investments and expansion by existing units.
Industries Minister Uday Samant said the Chakan region was expected to attract substantial investments and that infrastructure-related concerns were being addressed on priority. He added that demand for industrial land in Chakan could exceed available supply within a year, considering the scale of investments expected in the region.
Samant also rejected claims that entrepreneurs from the Chakan-Bhosari industrial belt were leaving Maharashtra. He said no entrepreneur had left the state and that investors continued to have confidence in Maharashtra's investment environment and the state government.
