Tiruchirappalli International Airport has commenced domestic air cargo operations, opening a new freight channel for businesses in central Tamil Nadu. The facility handled around 2.46 tonnes of cargo on its first day, with the initial consignment transported on a domestic passenger flight. The service follows security clearance from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security and is expected to benefit exporters, manufacturers and traders by providing faster access to markets within India. The airport will initially use its integrated passenger terminal for cargo handling as domestic freight activity develops.
Tiruchirappalli International Airport has commenced domestic air cargo operations, marking a new phase in the airport's role as a logistics gateway for central Tamil Nadu. The service began on August 25, with the airport handling around 2.46 tonnes of cargo on its first day of operations.
The first domestic consignment weighed around 1.19 tonnes and was transported on an IndiGo flight to Hyderabad. The launch follows approval from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), which cleared the airport to handle domestic cargo through its existing integrated passenger terminal.
The new facility addresses a long-standing requirement from the region's business and trading community. Until now, the airport's cargo operations were primarily focused on international shipments, leaving local businesses dependent on road transportation or other airports for the movement of goods within India.
The domestic cargo service is expected to benefit a range of industries operating in and around Tiruchirappalli. Textiles, engineering products, machinery, components, agricultural products and value-added food items are among the categories that could use the facility for faster distribution to domestic markets.
Cargo will initially be transported using the belly capacity available on passenger flights operating from Tiruchirappalli. The airport has regular domestic connectivity with cities including Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad, providing businesses with access to several major commercial centres. Shipments can subsequently be connected to other destinations through these hubs.
The introduction of domestic cargo services could also reduce the dependence of local businesses on road-based freight for time-sensitive consignments. For manufacturers and traders dealing with products where delivery speed is important, air freight can provide an alternative logistics channel and potentially improve access to customers in distant markets.
The development comes as Tiruchirappalli airport continues to experience growth in both passenger and cargo activity. The airport has recorded an increase in cargo handling in recent years, supported by the movement of agricultural and manufactured products to international destinations. The availability of domestic cargo services could broaden the range of goods handled and increase the utilisation of the airport's logistics infrastructure.
The Airports Authority of India and AAI Cargo Logistics and Allied Services Company are expected to work with airlines, freight operators, exporters and other stakeholders to expand the facility's usage. As cargo volumes increase, the airport could see greater demand for dedicated handling and storage infrastructure.
For central Tamil Nadu, the development could strengthen Tiruchirappalli's position as a regional logistics and aviation hub. Improved air freight connectivity can support businesses seeking faster links with major consumption and manufacturing centres while complementing the region's existing road and rail freight networks.
With domestic cargo operations now underway, the focus is likely to shift towards increasing volumes, adding more routes and encouraging a wider range of industries to use the facility. The growth of domestic freight could further enhance the commercial significance of Tiruchirappalli International Airport.
