The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved the extension of the Ganga Expressway from Meerut to Haridwar at an estimated cost of INR 10,761 crore. The proposed six-lane greenfield corridor will have provisions for future expansion to eight lanes and is expected to improve connectivity between western Uttar Pradesh and Haridwar. The project will also strengthen the road link between Prayagraj and Haridwar, two major pilgrimage centres associated with the Kumbh Mela. The state government expects the improved connectivity to support tourism, trade, investment and economic activity across the regions along the corridor.
The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved the extension of the Ganga Expressway to Haridwar at an estimated cost of INR 10,761 crore, expanding the state's access-controlled expressway network towards Uttarakhand. The proposed corridor will be developed as a six-lane greenfield expressway, with provisions for expansion to eight lanes in the future. The state government is expected to bear the cost of the project, with no central financial participation proposed.
The extension is expected to provide a faster connection between western Uttar Pradesh and Haridwar. At present, Bijnor and adjoining areas primarily depend on existing highway routes for access to Haridwar. The proposed expressway is expected to improve travel between the two regions while strengthening connectivity between Bijnor and other parts of Uttar Pradesh through the wider Ganga Expressway network.
The project is also expected to create a stronger access-controlled road connection between Prayagraj and Haridwar. Both cities are important pilgrimage destinations associated with the Kumbh Mela and are located along the Ganga. Improved road connectivity between the two cities could support religious and spiritual tourism by making long-distance travel more convenient for pilgrims and visitors.
Beyond tourism, the proposed corridor could have wider economic implications for western Uttar Pradesh and areas around the route. Better road access can facilitate the movement of goods and people, improve connections to markets and logistics networks, and support industrial and commercial activity. The state government has also linked the project to potential employment generation and increased economic activity in the region.
The proposed extension will form part of the broader Ganga Expressway network, which connects Meerut with Prayagraj. The existing 594-km corridor has been developed as an access-controlled greenfield expressway and is designed for expansion from six to eight lanes. Extending the network towards Haridwar would give western Uttar Pradesh a direct connection to another major economic and religious centre in the neighbouring state.
Following the Cabinet approval, the state government will move ahead with preparation of the detailed project report and other necessary procedures. The exact execution plan, construction packages and subsequent project timelines will be determined as the project progresses through the planning and implementation stages.
The Haridwar extension is part of a wider push by Uttar Pradesh to strengthen its expressway network and use major transport corridors to support regional development. Along with improving inter-state connectivity, the project could influence investment, logistics, tourism and land development patterns in areas that gain improved access to the expressway network.
