Air India has entered into an interline partnership with Bhutan’s national carrier, Drukair-Royal Bhutan Airlines, allowing passengers to travel across the two airlines’ networks through a single connected journey. The agreement is intended to improve air connectivity between India and Bhutan and broaden access to destinations across South Asia. Air India said the partnership gives it connectivity to nearly all countries in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) region through its own services or partner networks. SAARC comprises India, Bhutan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Afghanistan, the Maldives and Sri Lanka.
Air India has entered into an interline partnership with Drukair-Royal Bhutan Airlines to provide passengers with seamless travel across the networks of both carriers and strengthen air connectivity between India and Bhutan. The Tata Group-owned airline announced the partnership on Wednesday.
Under the arrangement, passengers will be able to connect between services operated by Air India and Bhutan’s national carrier, enabling travel across destinations served through the two airlines’ respective networks. The partnership expands the connectivity available to passengers travelling between the two South Asian neighbours.
Air India said the agreement also strengthens its wider regional network by giving the airline connectivity to nearly all countries in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) through either its own operations or partner airlines.
The SAARC region comprises eight countries: India, Bhutan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Afghanistan, the Maldives and Sri Lanka. Through its own network and partnerships, Air India said it can now provide connectivity to nearly the entire regional grouping.
The interline arrangement with Drukair adds Bhutan to this network through a partnership with the country’s flag carrier. Drukair-Royal Bhutan Airlines operates from Bhutan and provides connections to destinations within its network, allowing Air India passengers to access these services through the interline arrangement.
The partnership forms part of Air India’s broader network expansion strategy, with interline arrangements allowing airlines to extend the range of destinations available to passengers beyond those served directly by their own aircraft. For travellers, such agreements can facilitate connections between partner networks as part of a coordinated itinerary.
The collaboration also provides a link between Air India’s extensive Indian network and Drukair’s Bhutanese operations. This strengthens travel options between the two countries while adding another partner-based connection within South Asia.
Air India’s regional connectivity currently combines destinations served by the airline itself with those available through partner networks. With the addition of Drukair, the airline said its reach now extends to nearly all SAARC countries through this combined network.
The agreement comes as connectivity within South Asia continues to rely on both direct services and partnerships between regional carriers. For Air India, the arrangement with Drukair provides another route through which passengers can access destinations beyond its direct network while maintaining connections across the wider region.
