Water and wastewater technology company Gradiant is expanding its Global Engineering Center (GEC) in Coimbatore, increasing its engineering workforce from around 100 to more than 200 professionals. The expansion will strengthen the centre’s capabilities in process, detailed design and project engineering and allow it to take greater responsibility for Gradiant’s international projects. The company said the investment will support its growing business across semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, renewable energy and pharmaceuticals. Gradiant also plans to further expand its engineering operations in India over the next three years, with Coimbatore and Chennai forming a strategic global engineering hub.
Gradiant has announced the expansion of its Global Engineering Center in Coimbatore as it increases its engineering and project execution capabilities in India. The expansion will take the centre’s workforce from approximately 100 to more than 200 professionals.
The expanded facility will bring together multidisciplinary teams covering process engineering, detailed design and project engineering. This will allow the Coimbatore team to take greater ownership of engineering and design work for Gradiant’s projects across international markets.
Gradiant COO Govind Alagappan said Coimbatore’s engineering talent and established industrial base make it an important location for expanding the company’s global engineering operations. He added that the larger multidisciplinary team would allow the company to handle more complex projects for customers across different markets.
The expansion will create opportunities across several engineering disciplines, with professionals working on international projects and gaining exposure to advanced water and wastewater technologies, global engineering standards and multidisciplinary project execution. Experienced engineers will also support the development of younger professionals, with opportunities to move into technical leadership, project management and international project-facing roles.
Coimbatore’s engineering talent pool and manufacturing ecosystem have been identified as key factors behind the company’s continued investment in the city. The centre will support Gradiant’s expanding global project portfolio as demand for advanced water treatment and wastewater recycling solutions increases across sectors such as semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, renewable energy and pharmaceuticals.
The company said the growing investment in AI infrastructure, semiconductor manufacturing and data centres is also increasing the need for reliable water treatment and wastewater recycling. These industries require large volumes of water, making water management and reuse an important part of their infrastructure.
Gradiant Managing Director of India Hari Prasad said India is becoming increasingly important to the company’s global growth plans. He added that the Coimbatore expansion would combine India’s engineering talent with Gradiant’s international project pipeline and strengthen its ability to serve customers in India and overseas.
Gradiant already has a presence in India across advanced water reuse and wastewater treatment projects. Its India portfolio includes a 10,000 cubic metre per day wastewater recycling project for a solar photovoltaic manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu.
The company has also delivered an integrated ultrapure water, wastewater treatment and recycling, and zero liquid discharge facility for a US semiconductor manufacturer at its Gujarat site. The project adds to Gradiant’s work in India’s expanding semiconductor and advanced manufacturing sectors.
Over the next three years, Gradiant plans to further strengthen its engineering capabilities in India. Its operations in Chennai and Coimbatore are expected to form a strategic global engineering hub supporting projects in international markets.
Founded at MIT and headquartered in Boston, Gradiant provides water and wastewater treatment solutions for industries including semiconductors, data centres, energy and advanced manufacturing. The company has built more than 3,000 treatment plants across 92 countries.
