Tamil Nadu has decided to drop the proposed INR 27,400-crore greenfield airport at Parandur near Chennai and will explore an alternative location for the city's second airport. The decision follows prolonged concerns over the project's impact on agricultural land, water bodies and settlements in and around the proposed site. The state continues to face the need for additional aviation capacity as Chennai's passenger and cargo traffic grows, making the search for another location an important part of its long-term infrastructure planning.
The Tamil Nadu government has formally abandoned the proposed Parandur airport project in Kancheepuram district, ending plans for a major greenfield aviation facility that had been under consideration for several years. Estimated at around INR 27,400 crore, the project was intended to serve as Chennai's second airport and provide additional capacity as passenger and cargo traffic continued to increase.
The Parandur proposal had been planned as a long-term expansion of Chennai's aviation infrastructure. The existing airport at Meenambakkam faces constraints related to land availability and future expansion, making a second airport an important component of the region's long-term transportation strategy.
However, the proposed location faced sustained concerns from local communities over land acquisition and the potential loss of agricultural properties. The presence of water bodies and established settlements in the area also became important considerations in assessing the feasibility and wider impact of the project.
The state will now explore an alternative location for the airport where land acquisition and disruption to existing communities can potentially be reduced. The new site will have to be assessed for factors including land availability, connectivity, environmental conditions, water resources and its ability to support a large-scale airport over the long term.
The decision also changes the development outlook for the Parandur region. The proposed airport had been expected to act as a major catalyst for growth in surrounding areas, potentially supporting new residential developments, commercial activity, logistics facilities and other infrastructure. Improved connectivity expectations had also increased attention towards the wider real estate corridor.
Land that was acquired or placed under restrictions during the earlier airport planning process could require further consideration following the cancellation of the project. Authorities will need to determine the future use of such land and address the implications for affected landowners and ongoing development activity.
The experience also highlights the challenges involved in developing large infrastructure projects in areas with established agricultural and residential settlements. Airports require substantial contiguous land parcels and supporting infrastructure, while their location can influence surrounding land use, transportation networks and future urban expansion.
For Chennai, the immediate priority is expected to be identifying a location capable of handling long-term growth in passenger and cargo traffic. The state may also need to strengthen existing airport infrastructure while the alternative site is evaluated and the planning process for a new facility takes shape.
A new airport location could eventually create a fresh infrastructure and real estate growth corridor around Chennai. However, the next proposal will need to balance aviation requirements with land availability, environmental considerations, community impact, connectivity and overall project costs before a final site is selected.
