Synopsis

Global logistics company FedEx has announced an investment of approximately USD 150 million to develop an integrated air cargo hub at GMR Cargo City, Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi. The facility, spread across around 230,000 square feet, will bring international gateway and pickup-and-delivery operations under one roof and is expected to raise processing capacity from 600 to 5,000 packages per hour. The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Union Civil Aviation Minister Shri K Rammohan Naidu.

Express transportation company FedEx has announced plans to invest approximately USD 150 million to develop an integrated air cargo hub at Delhi airport, according to a company statement. The proposed facility will be located at GMR Cargo City, an integrated cargo and logistics development coming up at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).
The groundbreaking ceremony for the facility was held in the national capital on Tuesday, in the presence of Union Civil Aviation Minister Shri K Rammohan Naidu, who said India should serve as the backbone for global air cargo movements. Spread across approximately 230,000 square feet, the proposed hub is designed to bring international gateway operations and pickup-and-delivery functions under a single roof, a consolidation FedEx said would enable faster movement of shipments and greater overall operational efficiency.
Once operational, the fully automated facility is expected to increase processing capacity from the current 600 packages per hour to 5,000 packages per hour, with scope for further scale-up as demand grows, the company said. The hub is planned to incorporate an advanced auto-sorter, the latest generation of X-ray screening machines, enhanced security systems, and intelligent package-handling technologies aimed at improving both speed and accuracy of cargo processing.
Kami Viswanathan, President of FedEx Middle East, Indian Subcontinent and Africa (MEISA), said India remained a critical market within the company's global network, with North and East India playing an important role in the country's expanding trade and economic activity. She said strengthening the company's presence in Delhi would enhance connectivity across these regions and support businesses as they continue to grow, describing the investment as a reflection of FedEx's long-term confidence in India and its commitment to building the capacity needed to meet the country's evolving trade requirements.
The Delhi hub will be housed within GMR Cargo City, which spans 50 acres and carries a total development potential of between 1.5 and 2 million square feet. The FedEx investment adds to a broader pattern of global logistics and express delivery companies expanding automated cargo infrastructure in India, as the country's e-commerce, pharmaceuticals, and business-to-business logistics segments continue to record strong growth. FedEx has previously invested in scaling its India operations through other channels as well, including an equity investment in domestic logistics company Delhivery, as part of its wider strategy to strengthen last-mile and international cargo connectivity across the Indian market. The Delhi hub is expected to complement the company's broader network strategy in the region, which has also included investments at key international gateways such as Dubai.
