Synopsis

Chinese construction companies and Chinese-led joint ventures have secured a strong presence on the shortlist for Ethiopia Airlines’ planned new airport near Addis Ababa. Of the 33 shortlisted entries, 15 include Chinese firms or Chinese-led partnerships. The airport is expected to cost around USD 12.5 billion and could eventually handle up to 110 million passengers a year. The project includes a four-runway airport, terminal, support facilities and road links. Bidders will now move to the tender stage, with the facility expected to be completed by 2030 and supported partly through financing arranged by the African Development Bank.

Chinese construction companies have emerged as major contenders for Ethiopian Airlines’ planned new airport, with Chinese firms or Chinese-led joint ventures accounting for 15 of the 33 shortlisted entries.
The airport is planned southeast of Addis Ababa and is expected to cost around USD 12.5 billion. It is being developed to reduce pressure on the airline’s existing hub at Bole International Airport and eventually handle up to 110 million passengers annually.
The shortlisted companies include China Communications Construction Company, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, China Road and Bridge Corporation and Beijing Urban Construction Group.
Ethiopian Airlines has now moved the shortlisted bidders to the tender stage for the construction of the terminal, support facilities, four-runway airfield and connecting road infrastructure.
Chinese firms will compete with international groups including Italy’s Webuild, France’s Vinci, South Korea’s Samsung C&T, and Turkey’s Kalyon and IC Ictas.
Ethiopian Airlines secured the contract for the airport’s design work earlier this year. Ethiopian officials expect the project to become Africa’s largest airport when it is completed in 2030.
The African Development Bank is among the institutions arranging financing for the project and is expected to contribute USD 500 million.
The airport project comes as other countries in the region, including Kenya and Rwanda, increase investment in aviation infrastructure to support tourism, travel and trade.
