The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Northern Circle, Dinesh Chand Deshwal has completed the final safety inspection of the Katra-Srinagar section of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link in Jammu and Kashmir. The inspection was carried out on Friday and covered the railway corridor between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Srinagar, taking into account the region’s challenging terrain and weather conditions. Officials said the review included railway tracks, tunnels, bridges, stations and other safety infrastructure, along with operational safety, passenger amenities, signalling systems and emergency response arrangements. Deshwal expressed satisfaction with the construction quality and safety standards of the strategically important rail link. Jammu Divisional Railway Manager Vivek Kumar said the railway administration would implement the recommendations made during the inspection and rectify identified shortcomings within the stipulated timeframe to facilitate the commencement of passenger services.

The inspection was conducted in view of the challenging geographical terrain and weather conditions along the rail corridor. Deshwal reviewed the construction quality and safety standards of the section and expressed satisfaction with the work carried out on the strategically important railway link, according to officials.
Jammu Divisional Railway Manager Vivek Kumar and other senior railway and project officials were present during the inspection. The review covered the key infrastructure forming part of the Katra-Srinagar section, including railway tracks, tunnels, bridges and stations.
The CRS also assessed operational safety arrangements along the corridor. Passenger amenities, signalling systems and emergency response arrangements were among the other aspects examined during the inspection. The assessment was intended to cover both the physical railway infrastructure and arrangements required for safe operations.
The Katra-Srinagar section forms part of the USBRL, which provides the rail connection between the Jammu region and the Kashmir Valley. The corridor passes through difficult terrain, requiring extensive railway infrastructure including tunnels and bridges.
Following the inspection, Kumar said the railway administration would implement the suggestions made by the CRS and address any shortcomings identified during the assessment within the stipulated timeframe. The measures are intended to facilitate the commencement of passenger services on the section.
The inspection therefore marks a further step in the operational readiness process for the Katra-Srinagar railway corridor. Railway authorities will now work on implementing the recommendations and rectifying any deficiencies identified during the safety review.
The inspection also included passenger-facing infrastructure and operational systems, rather than being limited to the physical condition of the railway line. The review of passenger amenities, signalling and emergency response arrangements forms part of the broader safety assessment before passenger operations begin.
With the CRS having completed its inspection, the railway administration is required to act on the recommendations made during the exercise. Officials said the identified shortcomings would be addressed within the prescribed timeframe, after which the process towards commencement of passenger services can progress.
The Katra-Srinagar section remains an important component of the USBRL, given its location across the challenging terrain connecting Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra with Srinagar. The latest safety assessment has focused on ensuring that the infrastructure and operational arrangements meet the required safety standards before passenger services commence.
