Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has laid the foundation for water supply and sewerage projects worth more than INR 140 crore in Udhampur and Reasi, alongside the inauguration of an upgraded commercial corridor in Jammu. The projects include a INR 124.19 crore augmentation of the Udhampur town water supply scheme under AMRUT 2.0 and a INR 16.33 crore used water management project in Reasi under SBM 2.0, which includes a 3 million litres per day sewage treatment plant. Abdullah said the initiatives would strengthen urban infrastructure, improve access to safe and sustainable drinking water and enhance sanitation facilities. He also inaugurated the INR 9.18 crore, 1.2-km Residency Road-High Street corridor in Jammu, executed by Jammu Smart City Limited under the Smart City Mission.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah laid the foundation stone for drinking water and sewerage projects worth more than INR 140 crore in Udhampur and Reasi earlier this month, while also inaugurating an upgraded 1.2-km commercial corridor in Jammu as part of a wider urban infrastructure programme.
The larger of the two projects is the INR 124.19 crore augmentation of the water supply scheme for Udhampur town, being implemented under AMRUT 2.0. The project is aimed at augmenting and modernising the existing water supply infrastructure in the town.
The second project, valued at INR 16.33 crore, is a used water management initiative for Reasi under the Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0. It includes construction of a sewage treatment plant with a capacity of 3 million litres per day (MLD).
The two projects together represent an investment of INR 140.52 crore and cover both drinking water supply and wastewater management infrastructure. The initiatives are intended to address water supply requirements in Udhampur and strengthen sewage treatment and sanitation infrastructure in Reasi.
Addressing a gathering, Abdullah said the projects would strengthen urban infrastructure, support safe and sustainable drinking water supply and improve sanitation facilities. He also urged residents to conserve water and adopt rainwater harvesting under the government’s ‘Catch the Rain’ campaign.
The chief minister further called for the construction of check dams to improve groundwater recharge. He reiterated the government’s commitment to inclusive development and said genuine public demands would be addressed on priority.
In Jammu, Abdullah also inaugurated the upgraded Residency Road-High Street corridor. The INR 9.18 crore project has been executed by Jammu Smart City Limited under the Smart City Mission and covers about 1.2 km of the city’s commercial and civic road network.
The upgraded corridor includes underground utility corridors, improved footpaths, a renovated road surface and drainage infrastructure. The works are intended to improve traffic movement and pedestrian facilities while upgrading the urban infrastructure along the route.
The chief minister also directed authorities to expedite restoration of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway following disruptions caused by recent rainfall. The direction came alongside the inauguration of the urban infrastructure projects and the launch of the water and sewerage initiatives.
The projects in Udhampur and Reasi form part of infrastructure spending aimed at improving basic urban services, while the Jammu corridor focuses on road, utility, drainage and pedestrian infrastructure. Together, the initiatives cover drinking water, wastewater treatment, road infrastructure and urban services across the three locations.
