The Delhi government has reiterated that existing houses in the city’s O-Zone will not face demolition, amid a political dispute over ongoing action against construction in areas along the Yamuna floodplains. Delhi Development Minister Kapil Mishra said more than 30 lakh houses in the O-Zone would not be demolished and proposed a special discussion on the matter in the Assembly. The assurance came during the Monsoon Session after AAP MLA Sanjeev Jha raised concerns over demolitions and sought legal protection for unauthorised colonies, saying the status of 12-15 lakh residents remained uncertain. The O-Zone extends for about 22 km from Wazirabad to Okhla. Mishra said BJP MPs and MLAs had discussed the issue with authorities and accused the Opposition of politicising complaints concerning construction in O-Zone areas.
The Delhi government has reiterated that existing houses in the O-Zone will not be demolished, following concerns raised in the Delhi Assembly over ongoing demolition activity and the status of residential colonies located along the Yamuna floodplains. The assurance was given during the Monsoon Session earlier this week by Delhi Development Minister Kapil Mishra.
The issue was raised by AAP MLA Sanjeev Jha, who referred to demolitions taking place in the O-Zone and sought legal safeguards for unauthorised colonies. Jha said the situation had left the future of around 12-15 lakh people uncertain and raised concerns over the status of homes located in the area.
The O-Zone stretches for approximately 22 km from Wazirabad to Okhla and covers areas along the Yamuna floodplains. The zone has remained a subject of regulatory and development-related concerns because of restrictions applicable to construction and land use in the floodplain area.
Mishra described the O-Zone issue as serious and said BJP MPs and MLAs had discussed the matter with the authorities. He reiterated that existing houses would not face demolition action and said more than 30 lakh houses in the O-Zone were secure.
The minister also proposed that a special discussion be held in the Assembly to address the issue. His statement came in response to the Opposition’s concerns over demolition activity and demands for greater legal protection for colonies in the O-Zone.
Mishra accused the AAP of politicising the issue. He alleged that AAP workers were filing complaints concerning construction of houses in O-Zone areas, following which the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) could take action, which he said was subsequently being used for political purposes.
The government’s position distinguishes between existing houses and construction activity that may be subject to regulatory action. The latest assurance specifically concerns existing houses in the O-Zone and does not indicate that all construction activity in the area has been permitted.
The O-Zone’s location along the Yamuna floodplains has made regulation of construction and development particularly significant. The latest Assembly discussion has focused on the implications for residents and unauthorised colonies located within the zone.
The government’s reiteration is intended to address concerns among residents over the possibility of demolition of existing homes. At the same time, the dispute between the ruling BJP and Opposition AAP over the issue is continuing, with the latter seeking legal safeguards for affected colonies.
Mishra’s proposal for a special discussion could provide a forum for the Assembly to consider the regulatory position and concerns raised over residents living in the O-Zone. For existing homeowners, the government has reiterated that their houses will not be subject to demolition action, while questions concerning construction and regulatory compliance remain part of the wider dispute.
