Demolition of structures in Dharavi's Meghwadi area triggered protests after civic authorities began clearing houses as part of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project. Fresh tensions erupted in Mumbai's Dharavi after demolition of structures in the Meghwadi locality led to protests from residents, culminating in a group entering and damaging a rehabilitation project office linked to the ongoing redevelopment programme.
The demolition drive was undertaken as part of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, under which identified settlements are being cleared to facilitate planned redevelopment and rehabilitation. Civic authorities, accompanied by police personnel, carried out the operation amid security arrangements as several residents opposed the action.
Many affected families claimed they had not received adequate clarity regarding their rehabilitation status or the timing of their relocation. Residents alleged that some occupants were asked to vacate their homes before their concerns over eligibility and alternative accommodation had been fully addressed, leading to heightened anxiety and resistance at the site.
As the demolition progressed, protests intensified and a group of agitated residents entered the redevelopment project's local office, where property and equipment were reportedly damaged. Police intervened to disperse the crowd and restore normalcy, following which the demolition exercise continued under tighter security.
Officials associated with the redevelopment project stated that the clearance of structures forms part of the phased implementation of the large-scale redevelopment plan for Dharavi. They maintained that the process is being conducted in accordance with approved procedures and that rehabilitation is being undertaken for eligible occupants under the project's framework.
The Dharavi Redevelopment Project is among India's largest urban renewal initiatives, aimed at replacing informal settlements with planned housing, improved civic infrastructure, commercial spaces and public amenities. Given the scale and complexity of the project, authorities are carrying out redevelopment in phases while addressing issues related to eligibility verification, rehabilitation and relocation.
Urban redevelopment experts note that projects involving densely populated settlements often require sustained engagement with residents to minimise disputes during implementation. Clear communication on rehabilitation policies, transparent eligibility assessments and timely relocation support are considered critical to ensuring smoother execution of such large-scale redevelopment programmes.
The latest incident highlights the challenges associated with balancing urban renewal objectives with the concerns of affected communities. As redevelopment activities continue across different sectors of Dharavi, authorities are expected to focus on maintaining law and order while advancing rehabilitation measures and construction timelines.
