Indian Railways is considering introducing a new Vande Bharat Sleeper service between Bengaluru and Visakhapatnam, a move aimed at improving overnight rail connectivity between Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The proposed service is expected to cater to growing passenger demand on one of South India's busiest intercity routes, offering faster and more comfortable long-distance travel. If approved, the train would strengthen connectivity between two major technology and industrial hubs while expanding the Vande Bharat Sleeper network as Indian Railways continues to modernise its long-distance passenger services.
Bengaluru could soon be connected to Visakhapatnam through a Vande Bharat Sleeper service as Indian Railways evaluates plans to introduce another premium overnight train on the route. The proposal is intended to meet increasing passenger demand while expanding the reach of the country's next-generation long-distance rail services.
The proposed train is expected to improve connectivity between Bengaluru, one of India's leading technology and business centres, and Visakhapatnam, a major port city with growing industrial, commercial and educational significance. The route is widely used by business travellers, students, professionals and tourists, resulting in consistently high demand for rail services.
Unlike the existing chair car versions of Vande Bharat trains designed for daytime journeys, the sleeper variant has been developed for overnight travel. The new design is expected to offer modern passenger amenities, improved comfort and faster journey times on long-distance routes while maintaining higher operational efficiency.
Railway officials are assessing the feasibility of operating the service based on passenger demand, route availability and operational planning. If introduced, the train would provide travellers with an additional premium travel option and help ease pressure on existing express services operating between the two cities.
The proposed service is part of Indian Railways' broader strategy to expand the Vande Bharat Sleeper network across the country. Several intercity and long-distance corridors are being identified for deployment of the new trains as the national transporter seeks to modernise its passenger fleet and improve travel experience.
Enhanced rail connectivity between Bengaluru and Visakhapatnam is also expected to benefit regional economic activity by facilitating smoother movement of professionals, entrepreneurs and visitors. Improved transport links can strengthen business interactions, tourism and educational exchanges between Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
While the proposal is yet to receive final operational approval, the introduction of a Vande Bharat Sleeper service on the route would mark another step in the ongoing expansion of India's modern rail network.
