India's installed non-fossil fuel-based electricity generation capacity has surpassed 300 GW, with the country remaining on course to achieve its target of 500 GW by 2030, Union New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi said. Speaking at the 7th CII International Energy Conference & Exhibition in New Delhi, the minister stated that 30.58 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity was added during the first six months of the year, marking a 25% increase over the corresponding period last year. He also highlighted progress under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, noting that more than 50 lakh households have joined the scheme, while rooftop solar capacity has reached 14 GW.

India's installed non-fossil fuel-based electricity generation capacity has crossed the 300 GW milestone, placing the country on track to achieve its target of 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said on Thursday while addressing the 7th CII International Energy Conference & Exhibition in New Delhi.
The minister said India added 30.58 GW of non-fossil fuel-based electricity generation capacity during the first six months of the year, representing a 25% increase compared with the corresponding period last year. He added that the country has commissioned 90 GW of renewable or non-fossil fuel-based capacity over the past two years, reflecting the continued pace of expansion in the clean energy sector.
Joshi stated that India's non-fossil fuel capacity has already exceeded 300 GW and reiterated that the country remains committed to achieving 500 GW by 2030. He also called on industry stakeholders to increase investment in research and development to support the next phase of growth in renewable energy technologies and infrastructure.
Highlighting the progress of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the minister said the scheme has crossed the milestone of 50 lakh participating households. According to him, approximately one lakh households are being added to the programme every six days, reflecting increasing adoption of rooftop solar systems across the country.
The minister also said the pace of rooftop solar installations has accelerated significantly over the past nine months. Daily installations have increased from around 5,000 in October 2025 to more than 16,328 in July 2026, representing an increase of more than 3.2 times during the period.
According to Joshi, around 19 lakh households enrolled under the scheme are currently recording zero electricity bills as a result of generating their own power. He further stated that more than 12 lakh households have collectively earned approximately INR 421 crore by exporting surplus electricity to the grid.
The minister said the programme has enabled participating households to become electricity producers in addition to consumers, with the sale of excess power generating an average additional annual income of around INR 3,500 per household.
Joshi also informed delegates that India's cumulative rooftop solar generation capacity has reached 14 GW, underscoring the growing contribution of distributed renewable energy systems to the country's electricity mix. The government continues to position rooftop solar and other non-fossil fuel technologies as key components of its broader energy transition strategy and long-term clean energy capacity targets.
