Police in Maharashtra have arrested three individuals for allegedly attempting to extort INR 8.5 crore from a real estate developer in Thane district. According to investigators, the accused repeatedly threatened the builder and demanded money over multiple attempts before law enforcement intervened. Acting on the developer's complaint, police launched an investigation, gathered evidence and apprehended the suspects. The case is being investigated under provisions related to extortion, criminal intimidation and other relevant offences, with authorities probing whether additional individuals were involved.
Three persons have been arrested in Maharashtra's Thane district for allegedly attempting to extort INR 8.5 crore from a local real estate developer, police officials said. The arrests followed an investigation launched after the builder approached the authorities with a complaint alleging repeated threats and demands for money.
According to the police, the accused allegedly contacted the developer on multiple occasions and demanded a substantial sum while issuing threats intended to pressure the complainant into making the payment. Investigators believe the extortion attempts were carried out over a period of time rather than as a single isolated incident.
Following the complaint, the police initiated surveillance and verification of the information provided by the builder. Based on the evidence collected during the probe, officers identified the suspects and carried out operations that resulted in the arrest of all three accused. Authorities are continuing to examine electronic records, communication details and other evidence linked to the alleged extortion attempts.
Police have registered offences under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to extortion, criminal intimidation and criminal conspiracy. Investigators are also examining whether the accused acted independently or were part of a larger network targeting property developers and businesspersons in the region.
Extortion cases involving the real estate sector remain a concern for law enforcement agencies, particularly in rapidly urbanising regions where large-value land and construction projects attract significant financial interests. Police officials said investigations will continue to determine if the arrested individuals were involved in similar offences or had targeted other developers.
The accused have been produced before the appropriate court, and further investigation is underway to establish the full sequence of events, identify any additional accomplices and recover evidence connected with the alleged crime. Authorities have indicated that further arrests may follow if new links emerge during the investigation.
