The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) has secured the clearance of more than 2,200 residential units in Sector 6, paving the way for demolition activities in Meghwadi, one of the first clusters to undergo redevelopment. Demolition is part of the redevelopment of the 35-acre railway land parcel in Matunga, where rehabilitation buildings are planned for eligible residents under the project. Residents who have vacated have either shifted to transit accommodation or opted for monthly rental assistance, while discussions continue with those yet to relocate. Authorities said the clearance marks a significant milestone in the implementation of the Adani-led Dharavi redevelopment, although relocation efforts continue in other parts of Sector 6.
The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) has achieved a major milestone with the clearance of more than 2,200 homes in Sector 6, enabling demolition work to begin in Meghwadi as the large-scale redevelopment of Dharavi gathers pace. The clearance is part of the ongoing effort to redevelop the 35-acre railway land parcel in Matunga, where rehabilitation buildings for eligible residents are planned.
Sector 6 comprises localities including Meghwadi, SVP Nagar, Azad Nagar, Kamla Raman Nagar and Shahu Nagar, and is among the first areas identified for redevelopment. Authorities have been working to relocate thousands of residents since April, offering either transit accommodation or monthly rental support before demolition of existing structures begins.
With over 2,200 homes now vacated, demolition activities in Meghwadi are set to commence, allowing construction of rehabilitation buildings to move forward. Officials said the clearance represents significant progress in the land aggregation process required for one of India's largest urban redevelopment projects.
The relocation process, however, has not been without challenges. While many residents have accepted transit arrangements or rental compensation, negotiations continue with families in other parts of Sector 6 who have sought larger rehabilitation homes or raised concerns about the adequacy of rental assistance and the location of temporary accommodation.
Under the rehabilitation framework, eligible residents are entitled to newly constructed homes in accordance with the government's redevelopment policy, while transit rent and shifting assistance are being provided until permanent rehabilitation buildings are completed. Authorities have maintained that discussions with remaining residents will continue alongside project implementation.
The Dharavi Redevelopment Project is among Maharashtra's most ambitious urban renewal initiatives, aimed at transforming one of Asia's largest informal settlements through modern housing, infrastructure and commercial development. Officials believe the commencement of demolition in Meghwadi and the large-scale clearance achieved in Sector 6 will accelerate the construction of rehabilitation buildings and help advance the project's next phase.
