The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has crossed 300 million passenger journeys across its operational Metro network, marking another milestone in the expansion of Mumbai's urban transport system. The achievement was recorded in the past week across Metro Line 2A (Dahisar East–Andheri West), Metro Line 7 (Dahisar East–Gundavali), Metro Line 2B Phase 1 (Diamond Garden–Mandale) and Metro Line 9 Phase 1 (Dahisar East–Kashigaon). 
The authority said the network reached the 300 million passenger journey mark after recording the latest 50 million passenger journeys in just 179 days, making it the fastest such milestone since Metro services began. According to MMRDA, the achievement reflects increasing commuter confidence in Metro services as a dependable mode of public transport across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. 
Metro services on Lines 2A and 7 began operations in April 2022. Since then, passenger numbers have continued to grow with each network expansion. The addition of Metro Line 2B Phase 1 and Metro Line 9 Phase 1 in April 2026 added nine new stations to the operational network, improving connectivity and contributing to higher ridership across the system. 
MMRDA said the network is now recording an average daily ridership addition of nearly 2.79 lakh passenger journeys, compared with around 2.70 lakh during the previous milestone, reflecting a growth of 3.35%. The authority added that this increase was achieved despite weekends, public holidays and seasonal travel variations. 
The ridership data also shows that the current pace of passenger growth is more than 23% higher than the period between the 100 million and 150 million passenger journey milestones. Since the first five million passenger journeys were recorded in 2022, the average daily ridership addition has increased by nearly 9.4 times, indicating continued adoption of Metro services across the region. 
The network has steadily achieved major passenger milestones since operations commenced. It crossed five million passenger journeys within the first few months of operations, followed by 10 million in early 2023. The system later reached 50 million, 100 million, 150 million, 200 million and 250 million passenger journeys before achieving the latest 300 million milestone in the past week. 
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the 300 million passenger journeys represented the confidence that people of Mumbai have placed in the state's vision of developing a modern, efficient and sustainable public transport system. He stated that every Metro journey reflected a shift towards faster, safer and cleaner mobility and added that expanding Metro connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region would help create a city supported by seamless public transport. He also congratulated MMRDA and the Metro workforce for maintaining safe and reliable services. 
Deputy Chief Minister and MMRDA Chairman Eknath Shinde said the milestone reflected the trust commuters have shown in the Metro network developed by MMRDA. He noted that the authority aims to extend the same standard of Metro services beyond Mumbai into Thane and other parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, with the long-term objective of creating an integrated Metro network that improves connectivity across the region. 
Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA and Chairman of Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL), said the latest milestone demonstrated the increasing reliance of citizens on Metro services. He said achieving the latest 50 million passenger journeys in a record 179 days, with nearly 2.8 lakh passenger journeys being added every day, showed that the Metro has become an important part of daily commuting in Mumbai. He also acknowledged the contribution of engineers, planners, operations teams and frontline staff in maintaining safe and reliable Metro services. 
MMRDA has been expanding Mumbai's Metro network in phases to improve east-west connectivity, reduce dependence on road transport and provide faster travel options across the metropolitan region. Several additional Metro corridors are currently under construction and are expected to further strengthen the city's integrated public transport network over the coming years.
