Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has started its dedicated international freighter operations with the launch of an IndiGo CarGo flight to Sharjah. The inaugural service handled around 20 tonnes of cargo, including general cargo, perishables and bonded transfer shipments from Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The development marks a key milestone in the airport's cargo operations and strengthens its role as an emerging logistics gateway for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and western India. NMIA's integrated cargo infrastructure is designed to support domestic, international, express and transit cargo, along with specialised handling for multiple cargo categories.
Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has commenced its dedicated international freighter operations with the launch of its first international cargo flight to Sharjah. The inaugural freighter service, operated by IndiGo CarGo, took off over the past week, marking the beginning of the airport's dedicated international air cargo services.
According to NMIA, the launch reinforces the airport's position as an emerging cargo gateway for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and western India. The airport has been developed to complement the region's growing air cargo demand while supporting exporters, importers, logistics companies and freight operators.
The inaugural flight transported around 20 tonnes of cargo comprising general cargo and perishable goods. The shipment also included bonded transfer cargo that originated from Mumbai and Ahmedabad and was moved to NMIA through bonded trucking arrangements before being loaded onto the international flight.
The airport operator said the commencement of dedicated freighter operations is an important step in strengthening NMIA's integrated cargo ecosystem. The facility has been planned to handle domestic, international, express and transit cargo movements through dedicated infrastructure and logistics support.
NMIA has also developed specialised capabilities to handle a wide range of cargo categories, including perishable products, pharmaceuticals, valuables, dangerous goods and other specialised consignments. These facilities are expected to improve cargo handling efficiency and provide logistics support to airlines, freight forwarders, exporters and importers operating through the airport.
The airport spokesperson said the launch of the first international freighter operation marked an important milestone in NMIA's cargo growth journey. The spokesperson added that the successful handling of nearly 20 tonnes of cargo, including bonded transfer shipments from Mumbai and Ahmedabad, demonstrated the airport's ability to support reliable, compliant and seamless cargo movement. The spokesperson further stated that the operation was an important step towards establishing NMIA as a preferred air cargo hub for the region.
NMIA has been gradually expanding its operational capabilities ahead of scaling up passenger and cargo services. The airport has been positioning itself as a major aviation and logistics hub for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, with cargo infrastructure expected to play a significant role in supporting trade, e-commerce, manufacturing and export-driven industries across western India. The start of dedicated international freighter operations is expected to strengthen multimodal connectivity and reduce dependence on existing cargo facilities in the region.
