The Delhi government has commenced construction of a new foot overbridge across the Najafgarh drain to improve pedestrian connectivity and safety in west Delhi. The project, inaugurated by Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma, is intended to address long-standing access issues faced by residents and daily commuters. The bridge will connect Mukherjee Nagar, Gauri Mandir, Rajapura, Roop Nagar and the Yamuna route, while providing a safer crossing for students, senior citizens and other pedestrians. The initiative follows a recent incident involving the collapse of an older bridge and forms part of the government's wider efforts to strengthen public infrastructure through improved safety standards and connectivity.
The Delhi government has laid the foundation stone for a new foot overbridge (FOB) across the Najafgarh drain in west Delhi, with construction work beginning earlier this week. Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma inaugurated the project, stating that the bridge is expected to be completed within seven months to improve pedestrian connectivity and safety.
Speaking at the foundation stone ceremony, Verma said the government was carrying out a city-wide assessment of bridges, flyovers and foot overbridges to identify infrastructure requiring repairs or upgrades. He noted that several structures across the city had developed issues over time and that the administration had initiated corrective measures to address them.
The minister said work on the new foot overbridge had commenced immediately after the foundation stone was laid. According to him, the project is intended to provide a safer and more convenient crossing for residents living on either side of the Najafgarh drain while reducing the difficulties faced by pedestrians during their daily commute.
The proposed bridge will connect Mukherjee Nagar, Gauri Mandir, Rajapura, Roop Nagar and the Yamuna route. Once completed, it is expected to improve accessibility for local residents and facilitate easier movement for students, senior citizens and other pedestrians who regularly use the corridor.
Verma referred to the recent collapse of a foot overbridge, stating that the incident had highlighted the need for regular structural inspections and timely maintenance of public infrastructure. He indicated that the government was prioritising preventive measures to ensure the safety of existing bridges and related structures across Delhi.
The minister further said the project should not be viewed solely as the construction of another bridge but as an initiative aimed at improving public convenience and strengthening connectivity within the capital's transport network. He added that the completed structure would offer secure and accessible pedestrian movement while enhancing links between surrounding neighbourhoods.
The foot overbridge forms part of the Delhi government's broader infrastructure programme focused on improving non-motorised transport facilities and public safety. Upon completion within the proposed seven-month timeline, the bridge is expected to provide a reliable crossing over the Najafgarh drain and ease daily movement for thousands of commuters, contributing to safer pedestrian access across one of west Delhi's key urban corridors.
