The Ministry of Railways has approved a multitracking project worth INR 976 crore for the Danapur–Fatuha rail section in Bihar, a key stretch on the busy Delhi–Howrah corridor. The project aims to increase line capacity, improve operational efficiency and reduce congestion on one of Indian Railways' most heavily utilised routes. Once completed, the additional tracks are expected to facilitate smoother movement of passenger and freight trains while supporting future traffic growth and strengthening rail connectivity in eastern India.
The Ministry of Railways has sanctioned a multitracking project worth INR 976 crore for the Danapur–Fatuha rail section in Bihar, marking another step towards expanding capacity on the country's high-density rail network. The project targets one of the busiest stretches on the Delhi–Howrah main line, where growing passenger and freight traffic has increased pressure on existing infrastructure.
The proposed work will involve the addition of new railway tracks along the corridor to improve operational efficiency and accommodate higher train volumes. By increasing line capacity, Indian Railways aims to reduce congestion, minimise delays and enhance the overall reliability of train services operating through the section.
The Danapur–Fatuha route is strategically significant as it connects Patna and surrounding regions with the broader national railway network. It also serves as an important link for freight movement between northern, eastern and northeastern parts of the country. Capacity augmentation on the corridor is expected to support both long-distance passenger services and the transportation of industrial and agricultural goods.
Officials expect the project to improve scheduling flexibility by allowing trains to move more efficiently through the section, particularly during peak traffic periods. Additional tracks will also help segregate train operations wherever required, enabling better management of express, passenger and freight services.
Beyond operational benefits, the multitracking project is expected to contribute to regional economic development by strengthening connectivity across Bihar. Improved rail infrastructure can facilitate faster movement of goods, reduce logistics bottlenecks and support industrial, commercial and agricultural activities in the region.
The investment forms part of Indian Railways' broader strategy to modernise its network through capacity enhancement projects, including new lines, doubling, tripling and multitracking works on high-demand corridors. These initiatives are intended to meet rising transportation requirements while improving network resilience and operational efficiency.
Once completed, the Danapur–Fatuha multitracking project is expected to ease congestion on the Delhi–Howrah route, improve punctuality, enhance freight movement and strengthen rail connectivity for passengers and businesses across eastern India.
