A five-storey residential building collapsed in Maharashtra's Bhiwandi town late on Saturday, triggering a large-scale rescue operation by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local fire brigade and civic authorities. Several residents were trapped beneath the debris when the structure gave way, with fatalities and injuries reported as rescue efforts continued through the night. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse, while officials continue to search for survivors and assess the structural safety of nearby buildings.
A five-storey residential building collapsed in Bhiwandi, located in Maharashtra's Thane district, late on Saturday night, leaving multiple people trapped beneath the rubble and prompting an extensive rescue operation involving several emergency agencies. The incident occurred in a densely populated residential area, where residents were asleep when a section of the structure suddenly gave way.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local fire brigade, police and municipal authorities were deployed to the site soon after the collapse. Rescue personnel used heavy machinery and specialised equipment to clear debris while simultaneously conducting manual searches to locate survivors trapped inside the damaged structure. Ambulances were stationed at the site to transport the injured to nearby hospitals as they were rescued.
Officials confirmed that the collapse resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries, although rescue operations remained underway to determine whether additional residents were still trapped beneath the debris. The exact number of occupants inside the building at the time of the incident was being verified by authorities.
Preliminary inquiries have focused on the structural condition of the building and whether any safety concerns had previously been identified. Investigators are also expected to examine whether any renovation, repair or alteration work had been carried out in the building in recent months and whether such work complied with applicable construction and safety norms. Building collapses during the monsoon season continue to remain a recurring concern in parts of Maharashtra, particularly in older urban settlements where ageing structures, water seepage and inadequate maintenance can weaken buildings over time. Urban planners and safety experts have repeatedly stressed the need for regular structural audits, timely repairs and stricter enforcement of building safety regulations to prevent such incidents and safeguard residents living in vulnerable structures.
