Builders FirstSource lowers annual sales forecast as weak housing market impacts demand

#International News#Residential#United States of America
Synopsis

Builders FirstSource has lowered its 2026 revenue forecast after reporting weaker-than-expected second-quarter results, reflecting continued pressure in the US residential housing market. Lower housing starts, high home prices and elevated interest rates have affected demand for building materials, resulting in lower sales and earnings. The company has also revised its annual sales guidance to account for pricing challenges, commodity cost pressures and margin constraints. Despite these challenges, Builders FirstSource expects productivity initiatives to generate cost savings during 2026 as it continues to manage a difficult market environment.

Builders FirstSource has reduced its annual sales forecast for 2026 after reporting weaker second-quarter financial results, as continued softness in the US residential housing market weighed on demand for construction materials and home-building products.
The company said high home prices and elevated interest rates have continued to affect housing affordability, leading to weaker demand from homebuyers and slowing residential construction activity. The challenging market conditions have also resulted in lower housing starts, affecting sales across its product portfolio.
For the second quarter, Builders FirstSource reported adjusted earnings per share of USD 1.17, below analysts' estimate of USD 1.27, according to LSEG data.
Net sales declined 8.8% year-on-year to USD 3.9 billion, primarily due to weaker housing starts and related market headwinds. The company said slower residential construction activity continued to impact demand across key product categories.
Reflecting the weaker business environment, Builders FirstSource revised its 2026 net sales guidance to a range of USD 14 billion to USD 14.8 billion, down from its earlier forecast of USD 14.6 billion to USD 15.6 billion. The revised outlook takes into account lower pricing, commodity cost pressures and continued margin challenges.
Despite the softer outlook, the company expects its operational efficiency measures to deliver USD 50 million to USD 70 million in productivity savings during 2026, as it continues to focus on cost management and operational improvements.
The revised guidance comes at a time when the US housing sector continues to face multiple challenges. Elevated borrowing costs have kept mortgage rates high, while affordability concerns have discouraged many prospective homebuyers. These factors have slowed new home construction and reduced demand for building materials across the residential supply chain.
Builders FirstSource, one of the largest suppliers of building materials and manufactured components for the residential construction industry in the US, has been navigating these market conditions over the past several quarters by focusing on operational efficiencies, disciplined capital allocation and cost-control measures.
