French rail manufacturer Alstom is in discussions with Indian Railways for a follow-on order of 200 electric locomotives to be manufactured at its Madhepura facility in Bihar, according to a senior company executive. The company is also exploring the use of the plant for producing other railway-related products. The development comes as Alstom moves towards completing its existing contract for 800 electric freight locomotives, which is scheduled to be completed by March 2028. The Madhepura facility was established through a joint venture between Indian Railways and Alstom in 2015, with the original agreement covering the manufacture of 800 electric locomotives. The proposed additional order would extend the manufacturing activity at the Bihar facility beyond the existing production programme.
French train manufacturer Alstom is holding discussions with Indian Railways for a follow-on order of 200 electric locomotives at its manufacturing facility in Madhepura, Bihar, and is also examining the possibility of using the plant to manufacture other railway-related products, a senior company official said on Friday.
Vivek Garg, Managing Director of Alstom’s Madhepura Electric Locomotive Private Limited (MELPL), said the company was engaged in discussions with Indian Railways regarding the additional locomotives. The proposed order would follow the production of the 800 electric freight locomotives covered under the company’s existing programme at the Madhepura facility.
Garg said the initial order for 800 electric freight locomotives is expected to be completed by March 2028. Production at the facility forms part of a manufacturing arrangement established between Alstom and Indian Railways to produce high-capacity electric freight locomotives in India.
Indian Railways and Alstom established a joint venture company in 2015 to manufacture 800 electric locomotives at Madhepura. The facility was developed as part of the agreement between the two parties and has since been used for production of the locomotives covered by the original order.
The discussions around a further 200 locomotives come ahead of the scheduled completion of the existing programme. If the additional order is finalised, production at the Madhepura plant would continue beyond the current 800-locomotive mandate.
Alongside the proposed follow-on locomotive order, Alstom is also discussing the potential utilisation of the Madhepura facility for manufacturing other railway-related products. This would broaden the potential use of the plant beyond its existing locomotive production activities.
The Madhepura project was established as a joint venture between the French manufacturer and Indian Railways, with the original programme focused on electric freight locomotives. The facility forms part of India’s railway manufacturing ecosystem and the broader effort to produce railway equipment domestically.
The proposed expansion of activity at the plant remains subject to discussions between Alstom and Indian Railways. The company’s current manufacturing commitment, meanwhile, remains focused on completing the original order of 800 electric freight locomotives by March 2028.
