Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) has proposed changing its name to Keralam Metro Rail Ltd as its role expands beyond Kochi to urban transport projects across Kerala. Managing Director Loknath Behera has submitted the recommendation to the state government seeking in-principle approval. The proposal follows the state government's official name change to Keralam and is aimed at reflecting KMRL's wider responsibilities, which now include the Kochi Water Metro, electric mobility projects and metro projects planned for Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode. The company has completed Kochi Metro's first phase from Aluva to Tripunithura and is currently implementing its second phase.
Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) has submitted a proposal to the Kerala government to change its name to Keralam Metro Rail Ltd, as the company takes on a wider role in urban transport projects across the state.
KMRL Managing Director Loknath Behera submitted the recommendation seeking in-principle approval for the proposed name change. The move comes after the state government officially changed the state's name to Keralam.
Behera said the existing name is centred on Kochi and does not reflect the company's present and future areas of operation. KMRL's responsibilities now extend beyond the Kochi Metro to include the Kochi Water Metro, electric mobility projects and metro projects in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode.
KMRL has completed the first phase of the Kochi Metro between Aluva and Tripunithura and is operating the service profitably. The second phase, connecting Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium with SmartCity, is under implementation and is expected to be completed within a year, according to Behera.
The company is also involved in the Kochi Water Metro and electric mobility initiatives, giving it a broader role in the state's public transport network. Its responsibilities for the proposed Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode metro projects are another reason behind the proposed shift from a city-specific name to a state-wide identity.
The proposed name change therefore reflects the expansion of KMRL's mandate rather than a change to the existing Kochi Metro service. The company will continue to operate the Kochi Metro while taking up a wider role in planning and implementing urban transport projects across Kerala.
The Kochi Metro project was established as a major urban transport system for the city and its surrounding areas. The operational network currently forms the base for KMRL's wider transport activities, while the Water Metro has added an integrated water-based public transport component to the city's network.
If approved by the state government, the new name will allow the company to represent its expanding responsibilities across multiple cities and transport modes in Kerala.
