Synopsis

Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray has urged Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to intervene in the worsening traffic and infrastructure problems in Pune’s Hinjewadi IT hub. He has sought a single agency to maintain roads, greater deployment of traffic police and urgent repairs to damaged roads. Thackeray also called for the completed section of the Shivajinagar-Hinjewadi Metro Line 3 to begin services without waiting for a formal inauguration. He warned that companies could consider moving out if basic infrastructure issues, including traffic, water supply and garbage management, are not addressed promptly.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray has urged Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to take immediate steps to address traffic congestion and infrastructure problems in Hinjewadi, one of Pune district’s major IT hubs.
In a letter to Fadnavis, Thackeray called for one agency to be made responsible for road maintenance in Hinjewadi, with clear accountability and regular performance audits. He also sought the physical deployment of more traffic police personnel on roads and urgent repairs to severely damaged stretches.
Thackeray visited Hinjewadi earlier this week and raised concerns over the daily traffic congestion faced by residents and employees. He said the Shivajinagar-Hinjewadi Metro Line 3 is partially ready and urged the government to start services on the completed section at the earliest, even if its formal inauguration is held later.
He said residents in Hinjewadi and nearby areas are facing prolonged traffic jams, poor road conditions and delays in resolving basic civic issues such as water supply and garbage management.
According to Thackeray, around 6 lakh people are directly employed by the IT sector in Hinjewadi, while ancillary businesses employ nearly three times that number. He also pointed to the presence of several Fortune 500 companies in the IT hub. He said travelling between Phase 1 and Phase 3 of Hinjewadi IT Park can take at least 1.30 hours during peak periods.
Thackeray also raised the lack of piped water and gas facilities in the area, saying these basic services need to be addressed urgently.
He warned that without intervention at the highest level, companies could eventually consider shifting from Hinjewadi in search of better infrastructure and government services. He compared the situation with Chakan, where traffic congestion and infrastructure concerns have already prompted companies to consider relocating.
Last week, 20 small-scale companies announced plans to move their operations from the Chakan MIDC area near Pune, citing severe traffic congestion and inadequate infrastructure. Following the announcement, the Maharashtra government formed a high-level committee headed by the Pune district collector to coordinate road repairs, ease traffic and address infrastructure-related complaints in the industrial belt.
The concerns raised over Hinjewadi come as the area continues to remain an important employment and commercial centre within the Pune region. Improving road connectivity, public transport and basic civic infrastructure will be important to manage the growing movement of people and businesses in the area.
