Production growth across India’s nine key infrastructure sectors increased to 5.4% in July, supported by higher output of coal, refinery products, cement, electricity and iron ore. The growth was stronger than the 3.2% recorded in July last year but lower than the 6% expansion seen in June. The government has been releasing the core sector data with a revised base year of 2022-23 since June, replacing 2011-12. Iron ore has also been added to the index, taking the number of core sectors from eight to nine. Crude oil, natural gas and fertiliser production declined during the month.
Production growth across the nine key infrastructure sectors rose to 5.4% in July, according to official data released on Thursday. The increase was supported by higher output of coal, refinery products, cement, electricity and iron ore.
The core sector recorded 3.2% growth in July 2025, while the sectors had expanded by 6% in June 2026.
The data is now being released with 2022-23 as the new base year, replacing the earlier base year of 2011-12. The government has also added iron ore to the index, increasing the number of core sectors to nine.
Production of crude oil, natural gas and fertiliser declined during July, partly offsetting the growth recorded in the other sectors.
During April-July of the current financial year, output across the nine core sectors grew 4.3%, compared with 1.5% growth recorded during the corresponding period of the previous year.
The nine core sectors cover coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilisers, steel, cement, electricity and iron ore. Their combined performance is closely watched as these industries account for a substantial share of the Index of Industrial Production and provide an indication of activity across major infrastructure and industrial segments.
