Tata Power Renewable Energy has launched its Har Ghar Solar initiative in Bihar, with a target of facilitating rooftop solar adoption in five lakh homes over the next three years. The initiative comes as the state seeks to increase solar adoption, supported by additional subsidies under the PM Surya Ghar scheme. Tata Power said Bihar has a rooftop solar potential of 32 GW against peak demand of around 9 GW across residential, commercial and industrial consumers. The company has also introduced its Mysine battery storage system and plans village-level solar installations through its Mera Gaon, Mera Solar programme.
Tata Power Renewable Energy has launched its Har Ghar Solar initiative in Bihar, aiming to facilitate rooftop solar adoption across five lakh homes over the next three years.
The initiative is being implemented with support from the Bihar government and is linked to the Centre's PM Surya Ghar Yojana, which was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2024.
Tata Power CEO and Managing Director Praveer Sinha said the initiative is intended to increase solar adoption in Bihar and create greater awareness among consumers about rooftop solar.
The Bihar Cabinet has recently approved an additional subsidy of INR 10,000 per kW under the PM Surya Ghar scheme. With the additional state support, the combined central and state subsidy available in Bihar stands at INR 40,000 for a 1 kW system, INR 80,000 for 2 kW and INR 98,000 for 3 kW and above.
Tata Power Renewable Energy CEO and Managing Director Sanjay Banga said Bihar's slower adoption of solar power compared with states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh was surprising, particularly because electricity tariffs charged by the state's distribution companies range between INR 7.5 and INR 8 per unit.
Banga said the main issue was awareness rather than affordability. He added that Bihar has an estimated rooftop solar potential of 32 GW, while peak demand across residential, commercial and industrial segments is around 9 GW. According to him, wider solar adoption across villages could help the state reduce the risk of an energy deficit.
Sinha said the initiative could also support electric vehicle charging, citing its use for EV charging in Rajasthan. He added that rooftop solar could contribute to climate action while giving consumers greater energy independence and a long-term economic benefit.
Alongside Har Ghar Solar, Tata Power has launched its Mysine battery storage system in Bihar. Banga said the storage system can be used when excess solar power is generated or when interruptions in DISCOM supply otherwise require consumers to rely on diesel generators. He claimed that consumers using a diesel generator for even one hour a day could recover the cost of a battery storage system within two years.
The company said its offering combines solar installation, energy storage and operation and maintenance services. The focus is to provide consumers with a system covering the installation and subsequent upkeep of rooftop solar and storage infrastructure.
Tata Power's Chief of Solar Rooftop and EV Charging Business, Shivram Bikkina, said the Mera Gaon, Mera Solar programme, a part of the Har Ghar Solar initiative, will provide CSR-funded solar installations for every 100 households in a village.
The launch brings rooftop solar, battery storage and village-level solar installations under one initiative in Bihar. With the state's additional subsidy support and the central PM Surya Ghar scheme, the company is seeking to expand household-level adoption while addressing awareness around the use and benefits of rooftop solar.
