The Uttar Pradesh government has approved INR 164.77 crore for construction of a road overbridge (ROB) at the Mahanagar railway crossing in Lucknow. The project is intended to address persistent traffic congestion at the crossing, where road users face delays when trains pass through the area. The proposed overbridge is expected to improve traffic movement and provide a grade-separated connection for commuters travelling through Mahanagar and surrounding areas. The approval adds to Lucknow’s ongoing efforts to strengthen road infrastructure and remove railway-level crossings that create bottlenecks on important urban routes.
The approval of the INR 164.77 crore project marks a significant infrastructure intervention at one of Lucknow’s busy railway crossings. The proposed road overbridge is aimed at separating road and rail traffic, reducing the disruption caused when trains pass through the existing crossing.
The Mahanagar area is an important residential and commercial part of Lucknow, and traffic movement through the railway crossing can be affected by repeated closures for passing trains. During busy periods, the resulting queues can extend onto adjoining roads, increasing travel time for commuters and adding pressure to the surrounding road network.
The proposed ROB is expected to allow road traffic to pass above the railway alignment without having to wait for trains. Once implemented, this could provide a more consistent connection for vehicles and reduce dependence on the existing level crossing.
