Synopsis

Amazon India has expanded its freight operations on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) in partnership with Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd (DFCCIL), with a train flagged off from New Dadri Railway Station. The company has become the first e-commerce player to operate the inaugural Joint Parcel Product-Rapid Cargo Service (JPP-RCS) train on the WDFC. The daily service will connect Amazon’s northern and western networks, covering key locations including Delhi, Ahmedabad and Surat, with onward connectivity to Pune, Mumbai and Goa. The move will shift more shipments from road to rail.

Amazon India has expanded its operations on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) in collaboration with Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd (DFCCIL), a railway ministry PSU, with the flagging off of a train from New Dadri Railway Station.
The move makes Amazon the first e-commerce company to operate on the inaugural Joint Parcel Product-Rapid Cargo Service (JPP-RCS) train on the WDFC.
The daily rail service will connect Amazon’s northern and western networks, with more than 10 Van Parcels operating on the route. It will shift a part of shipment movement from surface transportation to rail, strengthening the company’s multimodal logistics network and providing a more reliable and sustainable mode of transportation.
The route will connect Amazon’s network across Delhi, Ahmedabad and Surat, with onward connectivity to Pune, Mumbai and Goa. The service is expected to support shipment movement ahead of the festive season.
Amazon’s expansion on the freight corridor builds on its collaboration with Indian Railways, which began in 2019 when the company became the first e-commerce player in India to use the railway network for express parcel movement.
Since then, Amazon India said its rail network has expanded from one train in 2019 to more than 140 trains operating across 130 intercity routes and connecting over 100 destination cities.
Kishore Lanka, Director-Operations, Amazon India, said the company was expanding its use of dedicated freight infrastructure to increase multimodality across its transportation network. He added that rail offered an economical, reliable and sustainable mode of transportation and that the company would continue working with Indian Railways and DFCCIL to improve operational efficiency and meet customer requirements.
The WDFC stretches approximately 1,504 km from New Dadri in Uttar Pradesh to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT) near Mumbai. Dedicated Freight Corridors have been developed to reduce pressure on the existing railway network, increase freight train speeds, facilitate heavy-haul operations and improve connectivity between ports and industrial centres.
Manoj Singh, Member (Operations and Business Development), Railway Board, said the DFC network provides a faster and greener freight option, allowing cargo to travel overnight and reach destinations the following day. He added that the service can move around 350-400 tonnes within 24 hours, while also providing an economical freight option for smaller businesses.
The expanded rail movement gives Amazon an additional freight option across the northern and western regions while making greater use of the dedicated infrastructure created for faster movement of goods between major consumption, industrial and port-linked markets.
