The Union Cabinet has approved the four-laning of the 82.578-km Muzaffarpur-Sitamarhi-Sonbarsa section of NH-22 in Bihar at an estimated cost of INR 3,590.73 crore. The project will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) and will improve connectivity between Muzaffarpur and the India-Nepal border at Sonbarsa. It will also strengthen links with the national freight network, industrial centres such as Barauni and river-based logistics facilities along the Ganga. The project includes seven major bridges, three railway overbridges and two flyovers to improve traffic movement and safety along the corridor.
The Union Cabinet has approved the upgradation of the Muzaffarpur-Sitamarhi-Sonbarsa section of NH-22 in Bihar to four-lane standards at an estimated cost of INR 3,590.73 crore.
The project was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) and will cover a total length of 82.578 km.
The corridor will provide a key connection between Muzaffarpur and the India-Nepal border at Sonbarsa. It will link with NH-27, part of the East-West Corridor, and is expected to improve connectivity between the border region and economic centres in Bihar.
The project will also work alongside existing national highways, including NH-31 and NH-122, while improving access to industrial areas such as Barauni and riverine logistics hubs along the Ganga. It is also expected to support passenger and cargo movement through the nearby land port at Bhithamore.
According to the government, the upgraded corridor will help reduce congestion in densely populated areas along the route, including Muzaffarpur, Muksudpur, Runni Saidpur, Thumma, Dumra, Bhutahi and Sonbarsa.
The project includes seven major bridges, including a 340-metre-long bridge over the perennial Bagmati River. It will also have three railway overbridges and two flyovers measuring 1,170 metres and 270 metres, respectively.
The proposed infrastructure is intended to maintain the movement of local and through traffic across the corridor while improving road safety and enabling faster travel.
The four-laning of NH-22 is expected to strengthen Bihar's road network and improve the movement of freight between the state's economic centres and the India-Nepal border. It will also provide better integration with national freight corridors and supporting industrial and logistics infrastructure.
