Around 1,500 people were evacuated from Aayakar Bhavan in south Mumbai after a fire broke out at the Income Tax Department's office building on Monday, August 17, prompting a large-scale emergency response in the busy Churchgate area.
The fire was reported at the multi-storey Aayakar Bhavan on Maharshi Karve Road at around 2.01 pm, following which the Mumbai Fire Brigade mobilised firefighting personnel and equipment to the site. The incident was initially classified as a Level-I fire before being upgraded to Level-II as the response intensified.
The blaze was reported to have originated in the basement of the building, which comprises a basement, ground floor and seven upper floors. Thick smoke subsequently spread upwards, creating difficult conditions for people working in the building and prompting evacuation efforts from the upper floors. Fire officials worked to prevent the flames from extending to other sections of the structure.
The emergency response involved several agencies. Mumbai Fire Brigade teams were supported by police personnel, BEST staff, 108 ambulance services and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation ward officials. Multiple firefighting units and senior fire officers were deployed as operations continued at the site.
The building houses several offices and units of the Income Tax Department and serves as a workplace for a large number of government employees. The scale of the evacuation reflected the number of people present in the building when the fire was reported.
According to officials, no injuries or casualties had been reported following the incident. The cause of the fire was not immediately established, while firefighting and safety operations remained the immediate priority.
The incident also brought emergency access and evacuation challenges associated with large government office buildings in densely occupied parts of south Mumbai into focus. Aayakar Bhavan is located in a busy commercial and administrative district, making the coordinated movement of people and emergency vehicles an important part of the response.
Further assessment is expected to establish the cause of the fire and determine whether any sections of the building or its facilities sustained damage. Authorities are also expected to review the circumstances surrounding the incident before normal operations resume across the affected premises.
