Around 100 metres of an under-construction section of National Highway-53 in Kendrapara district, Odisha, caved in on Sunday following a week of incessant rainfall. The affected section is located near Nilachal Bazar under the Marshaghai police station limits and forms part of the ongoing rebuilding and widening of NH-53. Three trucks parked on the construction stretch fell into a ditch after the road gave way. No injuries or fatalities were reported because no drivers or helpers were inside the vehicles at the time. A senior official from the National Highways Authority of India’s (NHAI) Bhubaneswar Regional Office attributed the collapse to prolonged water stagnation caused by the sustained rainfall. The incident has raised concerns among local residents about the condition of the highway construction.
Around 100 metres of an under-construction section of National Highway-53 in Kendrapara district, Odisha, collapsed on Sunday following incessant rainfall, with three trucks falling into a roadside ditch at the site. The incident occurred near Nilachal Bazar under the Marshaghai police station limits and involved a section of the ongoing NH-53 rebuilding and widening project. No injuries or fatalities were reported.
The affected highway is an important road link connecting Paradip Port with the mineral-rich areas of Jajpur. The collapse occurred after the region experienced continuous heavy rainfall for about a week, resulting in prolonged water stagnation around the under-construction stretch.
Three trucks that had been parked along the construction section fell into the ditch when the road surface gave way. Police said there were no drivers or helpers inside the vehicles when the incident occurred, which meant that no casualties were recorded.
A senior official at NHAI’s Bhubaneswar Regional Office attributed the road failure to prolonged stagnation of rainwater following the week-long rainfall. The official also said the trucks had not been authorised to park at the location. The affected portion remains part of the wider NH-53 rebuilding and widening works being undertaken in the area.
The incident has drawn concern from local residents, particularly because the affected section is still under construction. Local reports said the road failure followed sustained rainfall and that the condition of the newly built portion had prompted questions about the quality of the ongoing widening work.
Officials said the three trucks were subsequently removed from the ditch. NHAI officials indicated that the damaged section would be repaired, while maintaining that the vehicles had been parked at the construction site despite restrictions on using the area.
NH-53 serves as a key connectivity route in Odisha, linking the industrial and port areas around Paradip with the mineral-producing belt towards Jajpur. The affected section at Nilachal Bazar is therefore part of an infrastructure corridor used for movement between important industrial and commercial locations in the state.
The collapse comes during a period of heavy rainfall across Odisha, which has caused waterlogging and disruption in several parts of the state. The incident has also brought attention to the challenges involved in maintaining and constructing highway sections during prolonged monsoon conditions, particularly where water accumulates around unfinished road infrastructure.
