A landslide struck a construction site in Nandan County in southwestern China’s Guangxi region on Monday, killing at least one person and leaving four others trapped, according to local authorities.
The incident occurred shortly before noon at the construction site. Rescue operations were launched after the landslide, with authorities working to locate and free those who remained trapped.
The incident came as several parts of China faced heightened risks from heavy rainfall and geological disasters. The country has experienced a series of floods and landslides this summer, resulting in deaths and damage across several regions.
Chinese President Xi Jinping had called for stronger measures to prevent, mitigate and respond to natural disasters in an article published over the weekend. The call came amid continued concerns over the impact of extreme weather across the country.
Several regions were also dealing with the effects of Typhoon Dolphin, which brought heavy rainfall to eastern, central and northern parts of China during the past week.
In southwestern Sichuan province, authorities issued a heavy-rain alert covering Monday and Tuesday and warned of a heightened risk of geological disasters. Shaanxi province in northwestern China also warned of increased risks of floods, landslides and other disasters linked to the weather conditions.
The latest incident highlights the risks faced by construction sites and other vulnerable areas during periods of heavy rainfall, particularly in regions where geological conditions can increase the possibility of landslides.
